Quote:
LONDON, England -- A British businessman jailed in Dubai after being convicted with a female companion for having sex on a beach said he had acted naively as he spoke publicly Monday for the first time since returning to the UK.

Vince Acors, 34, and Michelle Palmer, 36, were arrested on a Dubai beach in July and convicted to three-month jail terms in October on charges of public indecency and for having sex outside marriage. Their jail sentences were suspended on appeal and both returned to the UK last week.

Acors, a telecommunications executive, admitted being drunk at the time of the incident after an afternoon of drinking but denied that sex between the couple had occurred and said that worldwide media interest in the case had given authorities no choice but to convict them.

"Sex in this country (the UK) is not the same as sex in Dubai," Acors told a news conference, adding that there was "physical contact but intercourse did not take place."

But Acors admitted he had been "extremely naive" about Muslim law in the Middle Eastern country.

He described how drinking was commonplace in the Emirate's Western hotels, and how his "champagne glass was never empty" during a Friday afternoon "all-you-can-drink" reception where he met Palmer.

Acors said the Dubai authorities had confiscated his passport during deportation proceedings that took three months. He returned to Britain on Christmas Eve and is now looking to sell his story.

He said he and Palmer had since spoken only to discuss the case and don't have a relationship. She was not at the news conference.

As you all know, Western Europeans are not at all like Ugly Americans who treat other cultures insensitively. Western Europeans are very sophisticated and indeed cosmopolitan, worldly people...

And I especially like the part where the convict is now looking to sell his story in Britain.

I've always thought the Brits had exactly the same reputation as Americans in continental Europe.

It was clearly high-cultured installation art, graciously presented free to the people of Dubai.

Have you ever seen the movie The Spanish Apartment? It's all about these European university students on an EU-sponsored exchange program, sharing an apartment. The British woman's brother comes to visit, and he is porrayed as pure unadulterated Ugly American. Interestingly, there is one minor American character, and he's a little goofy, but nowhere near being an obnoxious asshat like the Brit.

If this were an American story, the guy would need to be a pot-bellied pentecostal from Alabama who gets arrested in a Muslim country for handing out bible tracts, and Bush would have to go on TV and issue some bluster about how the muzzies better hand over our citizen unless they wanna see the business end of his cowboy boots.

Plus, you'd have to have the folks back home in the guy's trailer-park holding protests, carrying angry signs with the name of the country misspelled.

Brits tend to be like the Koreans, only in a European way instead of an Asian way. They tend to think the British way is the right way, etc. They tend to put huge barriers between the classes, can have a stiff upper lip and even those who claim they are down to Earth normal people still come out with sentences that make your skin crawl. Well, I'll avoid stereotyping individuals. I don't like to judge entire cultures, just an observation. I prefer to go on a person by person basis when it comes to judgment.

Thank you. I didn't know that. Makes me feel much better now you recognize my British superiority. Also thank you for refraining from an insecure attack on the well educated folk of Western Europe.

This is called the 'British Dream', where if your sexual shenanigans are news worthy then you can cash in and be 'someone'. Similar to the American Dream, only instead of business acumen you drop your trousers or knickers.

That's because the majority of Brits who go to Spain behave like absolute wankers. Poorly educated working class louts on package tours. They go to this fabulous country called Spain, so renowned for its history and culture, and they just want to lie on the beach and eat fish and chips, and drink obnoxiously. A national embarrassment.

That's a great movie by the way OTOH. I loved it.

Disclaimer: not knocking the 'working class' of which my family were spawn. Only the ignorant loud mouthed idtiots, of which there are so many.

when i was on a holiday in tunisia an English guy complained that the only reason there was a lack of spirits for sale was cos the country was so damn poor......i tried telling him it was more to do with their muslim beliefs coupled with the fact that ramadan was quickly approaching but he was having none of it (he actually complained that it was nothing like ibiza where he could get it dirt cheap)

But in fairness to him, he was a bit thick. He asked me prior to the conversation if i was from england, i said no, I'm from Ireland. His reply was, do you speak english there?

IDIOT!!

i agree with the poster above, it's only the idiots you get on package hols who give english ppl a bad name, we have the same with Ireland (they are called people from dublin)

Nice thread title......

In the UK we usually reserve the title sex offender to someone who abuses children.

Didn't realaise the US was so puritan about sex.

Which brings to mind this classic...

Quote:
And then some adenoidal typists from Birmingham with flabby white legs and diarrhoea trying to pick up hairy bandy-legged wop waiters called Manuel and once a week there's an excursion to the local Roman Remains to buy cherryade and melted ice cream and bleeding Watney's Red Barrel and one evening you visit the so called typical restaurant with local colour and atmosphere and you sit next to a party from Rhyl who keep singing "Torremolinos, torremolinos" and complaining about the food - "It's so greasy isn't it?" - and you get cornered by some drunken greengrocer from Luton with an Instamatic camera and Dr. Scholl sandals and last Tuesday's Daily Express and he drones on and on about how Mr. Smith should be running this country and how many languages Enoch Pow ell can speak and then he throws up over the Cuba Libres.

Quote:
crisps and the accordionist plays 'Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner'." And spending four days on the tarmac at Luton airport on a five-day package tour with nothing to eat but dried BEA-type sandwiches and you can't even get a drink of Watney's Red Barrel because you're still in England and the bloody bar closes every time you're thirsty and there's nowhere to sleep and the kids are crying and vomiting and breaking the plastic ash-trays and they keep telling you it'll only be another hour although your plane is still in Iceland and has to take some Swedes to Yugoslavia before it can load you up at 3 a.m. in the bloody morning and you sit on the tarmac till six because of "unforeseen difficulties", i.e. the permanent strike of Air Traffic Control in Paris - and nobody can go to the lavatory until you take off at 8, and when you get to Malaga airport everybody's swallowing "enterovioform" and queuing for the toilets and queuing for the armed customs officers, and queuing for the bloody bus that isn't there to take you to the hotel that hasn't yet been finished. And when you finally get to the half-built Algerian ruin called the Hotel del Sol by paying half your holiday money to a licensed bandit in a taxi you find there's no water in the pool, there's no water in the taps, there's no water in the bog and there's only a bleeding lizard in the bidet. And half the rooms are double booked and you can't sleep anyway because of the permanent twenty-four-hour drilling of the foundations of the hotel next door - and you're plagues by appalling apprentice chemists from Ealing pretending to be hippies, and middle-class stockbrokers' wives busily buying identical holiday villas in suburban development plots just like Esher, in case the Labour government gets in again, and fat American matrons with sloppy-buttocks and Hawaiian-patterned ski pants looking for any mulatto male who can keep it up long enough when they finally let it all flop out. And the Spanish Tourist Board promises you that the raging cholera epidemic is merely a case of mild Spanish tummy, like the previous outbreak of Spanish tummy in 1660 which killed half London and decimated Europe - and meanwhile the bloody Guardia are busy arresting sixteen-year-olds for kissing in the streets and shooting anyone under nineteen who doesn't like Franco. And then on the last day in the airport lounge everyone's comparing sunburns, drinking Nasty Spumante, buying cartons of duty free "cigarillos" and using up their last pesetas on horrid dolls in Spanish National costume and awful straw donkeys and bullfight posters with your name on "Ordoney, El Cordobes and Brian Pules of Norwich" and 3-D pictures of the Pope and Kennedy and Franco, and everybody's talking about coming again next year and you swear you never will although there you are tumbling bleary-eyed out of a tourist-tight antique Iberian airplane...
