Seeing as all degrees and transcripts must be notarized, what do the people who notarize them actually do? |

Take your money. Bang a stamp on a piece of paper. Something any flunky with a liberal arts degree can do. |

Pretty much nothing.
I'm looking at this guy whos notarizing my stuff and I'm like, hes not checking a damn thing...
it's just a formality to scare off anyone from sending a forged document, because the guy who IS forging has to go to the bank and talk to a guy. It's a hell of a lot more intimidating then sending a fake degree in the mail. |

Is it possible to get them to notarize a fake then? Don't they check with the university concerned? There was something in the paper in the UK about a company forging degrees and transcripts...How do you get by the DISSERTATION problem though, if the Uni want to see it?? Are dissertations usually just LOCALISED to the university library? |

A notary isn't really authenticating anything. It's just introducing a 3rd party into whatever paperwork you're doing. It's person who's supposed make sure your Id or signature isn't obviously fake or you're not signing papers shithouse drunk with a gun to your head. It's far less official than it's made out to be. |

uh right.
employers in the U.S. make a point of checking and verifying degrees; I don't recall even hearing of forgeries until coming here.
especially since 9/11 people are signing away their privacies left and right for all kinds of background and even credit checks - good lord - forging a degree is not something that's easy to do in the U.S. |

Well the question is how do Koreans check? I have seen some MA TESOL courses at UK universities online (some of them do distance courses), and most just ask for "A" degree and experience of teaching English. One also stated that non-native speakers require an IELTS score of "whatever it was, cant remember wot number offhand"....So, to me, the MA TESOL is just a money-making thing for universities, since most other MAs would require a BA in a closely-related subject. |
