Porn industry seeks its own US bailout
January 8, 2009, 9:23 am

Two porn moguls, including Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt, are seeking a $US5 billion ($A7 billion) bailout from Washington, arguing that the limp US economy has thrown cold water on the adult entertainment industry.

Flynt and Girls Gone Wild video series creator Joe Francis asked the newly convened 111th Congress "to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America" in a bailout move similar to the one set aside for US auto manufacturers.

"Congress seems willing to help shore up our nation's most important businesses, (and) we feel we deserve the same consideration," Francis said in a statement.

"In difficult economic times, Americans turn to entertainment for relief. More and more, the kind of entertainment they turn to is adult entertainment."

The pair were quick to admit that "the 13-billion dollar industry is in no fear of collapse, but why take chances?"

Francis, recently imprisoned for nearly a year on a prostitution-related charge after pleading no contest in a plea bargain, cited industry figures that show adult DVD sales and rentals decreasing 22 per cent in 2008, as people turn to the internet for adult entertainment.

"With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind," Flynt said.

"It's time for Congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly."

Flynt said people were "too depressed to be sexually active."

"This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such, but they cannot do without sex."

I'd wholeheartedly support it if it were only Larry Flynt. That Joe Francis guy is a fucking dirtbag, though, and deserves to be treated as such. And by "treated as such" I mean "repeatedly sodomized with an angry wolverine."

What a crock of sh*t. They're trying to milk the government for free money to just blow on lavish whatever yadda yadda.

Already, many executives are doing just this in the banking and finance industry. It's severely messed up. This bailout using borrowed funds from China is not going to work and we're just digging our grave deeper and prolonging death rather than trying to fix and recuperate from an economy and country ruined by scoundrels. Problem is, it's still ran by the same scoundrels who created this big mess even though we're getting a new and very great man as a president. He won't fix the USA, because too many scoundrels are still in power in the business world. We need complete country system overhaul and redesigning of all forms of social and economic systems. This would including halting all private business to reassess the situation to perform some micromanagement on a broad scale. We truly got it wrong and the world's going to hate us and anti-American sentiments are on the rise globally, because people are losing due to Americas irresponsibility. For example, Koreans are growing unhappy that their economy is going down since American consumers can't continue to buy all their exports. Hyundai is offering a 1 year money back guarantee now should you lose your job or get sick. Things are gettin tight. Of course, Asia's boom was supported by American consumers having access to huge amounts of credit. That for one is unsustainable, because you got to have an economy that supports many people to be wealth building for a lifetime; not taking out huge unserviceable debt on underpaying jobs.

In short, we need fire most of those in executive leadership positions today. You fire a CEO or even a corporation by refusing to allow their products on the market, refusing them all financial activity, and freeze all assets so you can try them on their blatant obviously wrongdoings. The US government could make it right, but someone in the government gets kickbacks from letting corporate interests run wild. It's still the wild West in the world of finance. I bet Europe would have a hay day in it's international court in Hague if we turned over the offending individuals.

I wonder if people even realize the reason they're doing it (especially Flynt) is because they are trying to make a point. They feel it is absurd that the government is bailing out private industries, so they want to ask for the same kind of benefits because if people feel it should never happen for the porn industry, it might cause them to think about why it's happening for the banking and auto industries instead. They don't expect any money, but they hope to generate conversation about the real money that IS going to industries that they feel don't deserve it any more.

And that being the point, I agree with them. I, too, dislike Francis for his crappy morals in everything he does for cash, but I do respect Flynt for standing up for what he believes in and using his notoriety to do so. Haven't seen his magazine in decades because I stopped looking at that sort of stuff when I was a young kid, but that doesn't mean I can't understand and respect his motives for doing something. In this case, I see him doing what other industries should have been doing: Calling out the government on how ridiculous their kowtowing to private industries really is.
