Hongdae's a good place to be. Jane's Groove has DJs and Sotto Gamba playing. Also, Twisted is going to be on at VIA, but a small venue. If you like drum and bass, Konkrete Jungle is at Cargo that night.

We should really get a sticky going for New Year's Eve stuff....these threads come up and then disappear after a few posts.

Where is the big outdoor party this year (or every year, probably)? Is it near Jongro? I had planned to go to a club, but there doesn't seem to be the one can't miss party, so I might just save my money....the lady doesn't seem too enthusiastic about hitting the clubs anyway, since we both have to work full days Wednesday.

So yeah, the big outdoor countdown....where is it?

Speaking of Jongno, who in the world really, truly wants to freeze to death and fight crowds and get pushed and knocked all over just to watch someone ring a big old bell? hahaha... Laughing I've never gone to this. Sounds about as exciting as catching the flu. But whatever floats one's boat, I guess. Laughing

me and my g.f were in seoul last year and we were thinking of going to jongro but changed our minds and went to an outdoor event at city hall, it was a concert organised by arirang and it was pretty much all in englisheee...there were some pretty big korean bands there, super junior even made an appearance if my memory serves me right!!

there was a nice number of people, not the mad number that turns up at jongro, we were lucky enough to even get a subway (limited line and stops) back to the hotel before they stopped at 1:30, only problem was that it was about -10000000 degrees but we bought some of those things you click 3 times that harden up and get warm!!

I went to Jongno last year and it wasn't too mobbed. We walked the length between Gwanghwamun station and Boshingak (the bell) on basically an empty street. Sure, there was mob around the bell, but who wants to be close to that? The main draw are the ridiculous fireworks on both sides of the street, which seem to never end. It was quite fun, with a big bottle of soju and orange. But it WAS freezing, as it's supposed to be again this year, so you'll be running for a pub/club by 12:05am!

There's not much happening in Hongdae for New Year's Eve, especially compared to Christmas. DGBD looks like it has a much better show than FF.

from a circulating email:

A free, fun midnight event on Dec 31st night in central Seoul:
11pm-ish or earlier
- take the subway to Jonggak Station (# 131) (*),
which will be at the Jongno Tower/Millenium Building intersection downtown, for the midnight gonging of the bell (33 times), large-screen TVs with entertainers at different locations, a crowd of 100,000+ (ie. wall-to-wall people), Roman candles in every other hand (you can buy them there), other fireworks, and li'l bands of traditional Korean dancers and drummers in the streets (who'll be only too happy to have you join in!)...

colourful and fun, a must-do-at-least-once-in-your life Korean celebration...but you gotta like crowds!

the subway system usually runs until 2am (all 'cept Jongno & Gwanghamun stations, which'll likely close at 11pm or before): shortly after midnight (say by 12:30am), I intend to head for City Hall station (# 132 and 201)...a few years ago, I couldn't get a taxi from that area until 5am Sad.

NB (*): station # 131 may be closed from 11pm and after the festivities. In that case, use another nearby station (its usually no more than a 15-20 min walk between stations). Expect crowds and some jostling...so keep a smile handy!"
