Wife got a new passport so my question is does she have to got BACK to the U.S. embassy to have the U.S. visa (it's good for 10 years) put into her NEW passport? She thinks they told her just to carry her old one (with the U.S. visa) with her new one and that would be fine but I just want to make sure. I live in New Brunswick but it's much cheaper to fly into Bangor Maine than to Fredericton. I also have 2 daughters, both have Korean passports but my eldest daughter (aged 5) has a Canadian Citizenship certificate, haven't done the Canadian passport thing yet. Anyway I also wonder if my 2nd daughter 4months old will simply be ok added into my wife's passport or will she need a separate U.S. visa? I have no vacation days left to go to the Canadian embassy and get her the Canadian citizenship certificate, so I was hoping that she would be fine simply added to my wife's passport.
Does anyone know the answer? I checked the U.S. government website and it said while Korea has been added to the visa waiver program it hasn't taken effect yet and therefore Koreans still need a U.S, visa. |

No. The US, Brazil and India are 3 countries (there may be more but I know of these with 100% certainty) which will allow you to travel with a current visa in an expired passport as long as it is rubber-banded to the back of your current passport.
Now, as for whether a Korean child can travel to the USA if he or she is included in the mother's passport, that's a separate issue. My instinct is to say no and that he or she will have to have his or her own separate passport, HOWEVER, it's not a question that has ever come up with me so I can't guarantee it. I would recommend dropping by (or having a friend or family member drop by) the nearest US consulate/embassy just to pose the question.
(PS I spent about a dozen years working in the visa/passport courier industry prior to coming to Korea, so I know what I'm talking about) |
