Hiya
I'm looking into working in the Gyeonggi Province and i'm about to have a chat with a recruiter regarding specific schools to apply to. Does anyone have any 'do's and don'ts/dangers' about working in the Gyeonggi Province?....

Cheers!!

Claire

I would avoid Lingua chains/franchises like the plague. Terrible books, bald faced lies, and idle deportation threats for demanding your severance.

Make sure that the location is within easy reach of Seoul. Additionally, many towns in Gyeonggi-do look identical and are fairly boring places to live in as an expat. I live in Suwon, which is alright but nothing special. If I could choose anywhere to live again, I would go for Suji-gu in Yongin-Si, or Bundang-gu in Seongnam-Si (try and get placed near a subway station). I would avoid Ansan, Siheung, Pyeongtaek, Hwaesong, and anywhere that is a long trek away from Seoul.

You will start to crave the variety and diversity of Seoul (which is really not that varied or diverse compared to cities in North America or Europe, but a heck of a lot better than most cities in Gyeonggi-do) and you won't want a long journey into the city.

Bundang is a planned city and is where a lot of wealthy Seoulites live....there are a lot of nice restaurants and cafes (Korean as well as other kinds), lots of good shopping, nice parks, and just a generally nicer area....also there is less pollution. Suji is adjacent to Bundang and feels a lot like Bundang.

well, i work in uijeongbu, and i would say stay away from avalon english

although it would be nice to have another foreigner, they're so unorganized, and the books and resources they use are terrible - tons of grammar mistakes and when i told them they said not to say anything because then the parents wouldn't buy them

Avoid OeDae Language Institute in Suwon. It's in the Maetan Dong area near the two Samsung towers. The owner (Mrs. Ann) will rip you off like crazy.

Try to find something close to a subway station on the Seoul subway lines. It'll make a HUGE difference when it comes to shopping and enjoying your leisure time. Buses take FOREVER, stop everywhere, and just plain suck. Wink

That's good advice! Bus drivers here lurch you around endlessly, so you don't want to live anywhere that requires taking one for more than short jaunts.

For people like me who come to the big city once or twice (at most) per month, distance to Seoul hardly matters as long as you don't have to take the bus to get there. As it stands, I take a train for about 75 minutes to get to Seoul Station.

I've heard they're soon extending the subway all the way up here, which will make it even more convenient to get to Seoul from my backwater part of Gyeonggi-do.
