Hey Dudes,

I spent my first year in Korea teaching at a village of Englishness, and my second at a middle school hakwon. Each were different and special and unique in their own way.

I'm now preparing for Korea, Season 3: The High School Years. And I'm wondering what to expect teaching at a foreign language high school.

What's it like? How does teaching high school kids differ from middle schoolers? FL High School vs. Hakwon? What's the dealio?

I do realize these are the kinds of questions I should ask my new employer, and I have. I'm just hoping to hear more input from other teachers.

Thanks a bunch.

If it`s Daewon, Daeil, etc in Seoul then you`re in for a comfortable classroom environment, as the students will either be a) returnees or b) highly skilled enough to understand you. Some might be bratty as expected with rich, smart kids. They want to learn and usually want to be in your class. Also, they still do typical teenager stuff like sneak out after curfew and go to clubs.

I worked with some kids who went to Daewon and they were a pleasure to teach. On the flip side I also worked with some students from the Daegu foreign language high school and their level was pretty poor. couldnt write or speak very well. I think it was because they went to the foreign language high school on the merit of their Japanese or Chinese lang. skills to study Japanese or Chinese, not English.
