I have recently returned to the UK after a year of teaching in Korea. I came back halfway through the tax year but have been lead to believe that I should have paid UK tax on my Korean earnings.
Is this true? What is the situation for people from the UK paying tax on EFL earnings? |

They don't but the Student Loans Company know I did and I did mention to the IR that I had been away.
I am worrying the Inland Revenue could ask the SLC if I was making contributions to them.
The Inland Revenue have sent me a P86 form to say when and how long I was away for and if I was working.
I am wondering if anyone else knows about this area?
I guess it's something most TEFL'ers don't think about... |

I'm not even going to mentioning my earning to the IR, but u paid korean income tax so u shudn't pay uk income tax too, also i believe if ur in the UK for less than 90 days of the tax year u can claim no residency if it comes down to it.
I never even told the SLC that i was away for 18 months (i know ur supposed to if ur away for more than 3) but i don't think they keep close tabs on it...I haven't even started making payments n i graduated in 2006. but anyway my Korean salary was below the repayments threshold anyway and i didn't work a full financial year in the UK before that. |

You don't have to pay UK tax if you pay Korean tax, so long as you are out of the country long enough....dont quote me it's just stuff i have hears but best to ask the IR directly, they will tell you then if you owe anything or not.
In any case, you should have sent in form blaah blah blah before you left to tell them you would be out of the country.
Don't forget though you can top up your state pension, usually they send you a letter in the post about this.
Let us know what the IR say, so we all know in future. |
