I'm throwing a Christmas party then heading immediately to Guam until the New Year, unlikely to spend much if any time in front of a computer, so this is my last chance to wish you all a...
Happy Holidays and may 2009 start off well for you and yours!

It could have been better but all in all, it could also have been much, much worse. Had some good times, made some headway.
Van Islander, have a good time in Guam, and a Merry Christmas to you as well! |

2005 ---- I worked 50 weeks out of 52.
2006 ---- I worked about 30 weeks out of 52.
2007 ---- I worked 50 weeks out of 52.
2008 ---- I worked 50 weeks out of 52.
Basically I've had 1 good year out of the past 4.
And 2008 was not of them.
For me, it was a carbon copy of 2007. Same job. Same pay. Some everything.
I get 1 week off starting xmas eve this week and it can't come soon enough.
I feel exhausted, angry, tired, fatigued, financially stressed, ... I feel like I need to stop and just breathe again.
Please god, don't let 2009 be like 2008. |

I saved a bit of cash.
I took a few months' worth of vacation time.
My daughter is happy and healthy.
My job is/has been well above average.
My wife and I are all good.
Now, if only the won would kick it up a notch... |

Panda's 2008----growing pain
Very special year for me, both my personal life and career went into crisis. After staying in the tower of ivory for too long, I was almost knocked down by the pain that suddenly hit me. But I survived the tsunami, and was so happy to see how brave and strong I had become.
In 2009, Panda plans to
1, spend more time talking to her parents and old freinds.
3, continue with her writing
3, pass TOPIK test advanced level
4, invest her money wisely with the help from her friends.
5, continue with her shaping
6, stay in a good relationship with the guy she newly dated.
In 2009, Panda wishes all ppl from Dave's happiness and success.

2008: not too bad all things considered... in no particular order of good or bad:
Graduated from Teachers' College in NZ;
Have a full-time permanent job teaching computing at a high school starting at the end of January 2009;
Job also includes teaching one class of junior maths;
Lived for 6 months with my girlfriend who is 17 years younger than me;
Broke up with said girlfriend but still good friends;
Visiting Korea at this very moment for a holiday and don't want to leave;
Found out that one of my ex-students has been accepted into Seoul National University - I only taught her for 4 or 5 months back in 2003-2004 but by God I must have done a good job!!! |

Despite my seemingly doomsdayist take on the current global economic situation (see: recent posts on investing,)
I voted that it's been a great year. Definitely in the top few of adult life.
I've taken a unique opportunity to study, and much more focused and diligently than I ever did in school.
I call it my Quest for the Truth.
Not a mission to find Jesus, though religion certainly has been a part of it.
Mostly history, economics, and cultural things.
Best to All~! Keep your powder dry and stay frosty. |

Hands down worst year of my life since my dad died in June, I having grown up one-on-one with him as a super single parent. I inherited enough to do whatever I damn please for a year or two or three and want to make the future bright. But my attitude has been pretty good as I was close to my dad growing up, and feel instead of an emptiness, a fullness of memory (but definitely an endedness nonetheless).
I have on my fridge the phrase my dad wrote over a quarter century ago, the same magic marker mini-ink pad with the same original etching, I brought it back to Korea when I returned after a summer back home settling affairs: It says "The most important is to have a good day". It cheered me up so long ago and he never took it down, making reference to it when apt. It's technically grammatically incorrect ('thing' is missing) but my dad was a Hungarian freedom fighter in the failed 1956 revolt against Soviet occupation (and attempted assimilation), having to immigrate to Canada soon after, learning English very well over the next half century, had a great vocabulary and ruled Scrabble thanks to a tome of a dictionary he actually read in its entirety. I've had many good days this year, relatively speaking.

Better to have fun in Guam and maybe send pics to make extended family and friends a bit jealous than go back to the ol' home town for the holidays and have a pity party with friends, aunts, uncle, cousins, grandmother (and maybe even the half-sister through a wayward mom I've never known). No thanks!
This was supposed to be my big departure this summer but thought it wise to return to the regularity of a decent routine and finish the contract out then see from there, taking the time now to mull over my options as I work at the hagwon job I really like and plan to finish my third year at (thereafter.... wha?... go back to grad school, open a biz, buy some property, keep doing the job I love, take the time to write those two books I must do, travel, etc, and keep my eyes open for marriage and childrearing prospects, something I've always wanted but never quite worked out), ending out my thirties next year (can't even say it).
Anyways, happy new year guys! |

Sorry to hear about your father.
You're a very strong person to remain so positive. It sounds like your dad was a great man.
I hope 2009 is a complete 180 for you and I wish you success at whatever you decide on.
You should write for sure, that can be done along side grad school, business ownershi, or travel right?
Merry Christmas V.I. |

Pretty good year-4 days a week last year loved my job, 1 day/week I had human garbage principal.
I moved to the big city-amenities are important. I'm in an alright job, just a bigger school.
Pretty good, Happy New Year! |

My favorite part of 2008 is that it is almost over. Tough year.
Some bright spots though, including:
Barack Obama winning the election.
Trying to teach my elementary school students to say "election day" and not "erection day"
Making sweet friends in Korea
All Sarah Palin related internet videos (especially the Turkey one)
Being half of a luchador tag-team for Halloween
This sweet Peppero Stick day card from a student who has made major progress in English
Good luck in 2009! I'm thinking this will be a good one. |
