Banks are still as dumb and ignorant of foreigners needs as ever.
When I lived in China from 1995 - 1998, I could go to a bank and withdraw money from my US bank account from my US Visa Bank Card.
One cannot do that here, and it is almost 2009!

Service in transferring depends a lot on the customer representative you have at the desk.
For two years, I used the same person. He knew exactly what to do. I could be in and out of the bank within about 20 minutes. Sadly, he transferred to another city.
Since then, I've had one woman who ticked me off to the point of telling her, "did you want me to withdraw all my money and move banks?"
Also, I had one representative who wanted to touch my passport. I said,"No, you have no reason to see or touch my passport at all." |

Yes you can...I use my USA VISA bank card all the time here and never had a problem....I swear some of the posters here are full of ****.
EDIT: you may have to call your AMERICAN card company to authorize it for international use. |

Really?
In my city, there are only two ATMs that can do it and none of the bank branches will do it. Doesn't matter which bank, I've tried them all and they all say to use those ATMs which for one aren't close to where I live and two close by 10pm every night making it quite inconvenient for me. I have a Nonghyup bank just 5 minutes walk from me but ohno they can't do that. |

I've been banking at KEB in Daejeon (Dunsan) for several years. I left this week. The final straw was their inability to deposit an international money order into my account. I didn't want to cash it, I knew there would be a waiting period for it to clear...but no...impossible. Not to mention that it is "impossible" for them to give international ATM cards to foreigners.
I went to my new bank, SC First, got an international ATM card, deposited my international money order and went home. SC First has GREAT service!
The Korea Exchange Bank? The only thing they exchange is my (valuable) free time into wasted time. |

You luckily found a place to use it. Most places don't.
My card works in every country I've ever traveled to.. except Korea. |

WAIT, I forgot to mention....
You have to use a "global atm" machine....it's usually one in the middle that says "global ATM" in any row of ATM machines...
Are they not prevalent outside of seoul? |

Not really, you usually have to search for them and are lucky to find one near where you live. |

The one in Eunhaeng-dong is stellar. Cash international cheques and money orders, remit money without the need for stamping passports, etc etc. The ATM card thing is the only complaint I have with that branch. |

That's the reasons we can't really say "Bank A sucks" or "Bank B sucks". They are inconsistent from branch to branch. As far a SC First goes, I can only say that my branch rocks. |

Some of the subway stations have "Global ATM's." At least they did about four years ago when I withdrew money from my U.S. bank account. |

Used to use KEB in Dunsan (across from E-Mart). |

Thanks. I'll head over there next week when time frees up. I haven't had an SC account for YEARS, probably as far back as '98. They weren't even called SC First back then. I really don't need yet another bankbook, but I do want that int'l card for trips this winter. |
