Illegal pepper spray sales jump:

Online sales of unauthorized pepper spray and other self-defense items have recently jumped amid the increasing crime rate.

The unauthorized possession of such ``illegal weapons'' is subject to up to 10 years in prison or a 20 million won ($14,000) fine
, police said Tuesday.

Seven-hundred and seventy cans of pepper spray made in the United States were sold through an online auction site here. They look like ordinary pepper spray but used compressed air, classifying them as gas guns requiring police authorization for possession and trade. They can spray pepper up to three meters until their contents are depleted.

Pepper sprays made in Korea use a pump to bypass rules requiring authorization ― spraying occurs in limited amounts with the touch of a button.

The online seller has halted sales since they were revealed to be illegal, but no one has yet reported buying the items to police.

``You could be ignorant of the law, but possession is still illegal,'' a police spokesman said.

It's shows the retarded nature of Korean laws.

1. Police don't help protect people on the street (esp. women and foreigners) or are too slow to do so.
2. Judges give rapists 0-6 months in prison.
3. Citizens want a non-lethal way to protect themselves.
4. Courts threaten 10 years in prison for simply possessing a non-lethal substance.

Ten years?! And how long do people get for rape again? This needs a bump.

It only seems to be women and children at any real risk in this country Sad

And a legal/police system that almost seems to co-conspire with sexual attacks with laughably lenient sentances.

Maybe firearms would be more appropriate for the ladies than pepper spray?

It wasn't pleasant (we're referring to an episode where I had at altercation with a couple of angry gyopos - I didn't start it. Long story short, one of 'em pepper sprayed me. It fucking sucked).

Hmmmm, always assumed pepper spray was pretty worthless. I equated it with CS gas which does little more than clear your sinuses...

Good info ^^

Think of it this way... if you're going to go to jail for 10 years anyway, would you rather it be for spraying the rapist with pepper spray or for shooting his balls off? I'd think the latter is the way to go. At least then you'd be assured of some justice in this country. Heaven knows you can't depend on the Good Old Boys in the police and courts to dispense it for you.

Not in Korea. In this regard at least, Korea is a world leader, both in pepper spray and teargas.

I got teargassed in the protests leading up to the financial crisis in '97... dropped me like a stone. I thought I was going to cough up a lung and was ready to pass out because I was coughing out so much air, I wasn't getting any air IN. I've survived teargas training in Canada (during my brain damage years of trying to be a cop), and that paled in comparison.
