Which band is more influential?
I say Joy Division, as they really shaped music in the 80's and it seems that much of what I hear today has a heavy Joy Division sound. |

In terms of spin-off bands, New Order has had a bigger impact than Foo Fighters (nothing against Dave Grohl). |

I know it is really a Joy Division song, but I think New Order's "Ceremony" is one of the best songs of the 80's. BTW, John Peel also thought so. |

Joy Division are the better band. This is a wierd comparison though, I don't see the connection. |

Nirvana blows Joy Division away...
Both bands fathered scenes, or at least were the main band associated with it (grunge & post-punk, respectively), and both were fronted by tortured souls that you couldn't rip your eyes off of.
But Nirvana was heralded as the band that defined our generation. They had more of an impact on mainstream culture, had more cross-genre influence, had a bigger discography and sold more records... they're right up there with the Beatles on many critics' lists as bands that changed music, not just a subgenre of it. |

Nirvana for it's immediate influence.
Joy Division's influence seems to be neverending. |

Did anyone watch "Control" or the New Order Documentary (can't remember the name)?
The guy who played Ian Curtis in Control was uncanny in his performance, especially those slick 80's dance moves.

I think this is what it comes down to; did you grow up in the 80's or 90's.

IMO, Nirvana's influence is declining, while JD's seems to be increasing. |

This is true, I havn't heard many bands recently that don't have a hint of Joy Division.
This is just my opinion but while I love Nirvana, it seems a lot of bands who are influenced by them suck. That quiet/loud thing they had going on got co opted by alot of terrible bands. The bands who followed in JD's wake just seem to be better. |

Both are enormously overrated and lamentably influential bands with leaders that died too late, rather than too early.
Oooh, that's kind of nasty. |

I would vote Joy Division on this one.
Now, the question remains, would you rather hang yourself or blow your brains out? |

I think in terms of black eye-liner sales vs. flannel shirt sales then JD would take it. "Gunge" as they called it thankfully only lasted a few short years so the flannel industry didn't flourish for to long. The post-punk/goth thing has never gone away. Since about 2002ish, the current trend that has picked up steam is the "three words for the groups name" emo cry baby bands. And they are all sporting the eye-liner.

joy division are definitely more influential, but i'd rather listen to nirvana.
i think nirvana built on their influences, ie. pixies, black sabbath, etc., and made something amazing with them. sadly their legacy was to have influence d a lot of crap bands who didn't have the tunes and the soul that kurt cobain had.
still, joy division were also genius, it should be said. they created a sound, whereas nirvana perfected an existing one. |
