who agrees???? I understand why photos are required in every job application in Korea. They want to hire only the goodlooking people..I guess that's the way it is in Korea. . It's not like this in the U.S., where you just provide your social security number and resume.. The question is have you been discriminated by any employer for the way you looked.. I know for a fact that Korea is infatuated with good looks...

I've seen plenty of uggos working for hagwons....some hotties but plenty of average and some downright dumpy.

I think you're right about looks getting you further in Korea. However I don't think you have to be particularly good-looking to be considered handsome. I get told I am handsome on a regualr basis even though I'm average looking at best.

I would have thought this to be more of an issue in the hagwons though, parents like their children's teachers to be good-looking, like it matters. My best teacher ever looked like Terry Jones.

I've never heard of a serious employment position in the U.S. that only requires a SSN and a resume for one to be hired. The applicant has to go through some sort of an interview process. During that process such things as demeanor and appearance are evaluated.

By any chance do you have a point on the top of your head? Or perhaps your head is shaped like a pin?

As long as you're not an uncontrollable psychopathic child abuser, good looks is the most important factor to doing well in Korea.

The difference between getting that sweet Uni job and not getting it is probably down to your looks, personal grooming, weight, and how nice a suit you wear to the interview.

My list of how the average Korean employer rates applicants in order of importance....

1. Looks
2. Race/nationality
3. Age
4. Gender.
5. Grooming.
6. Personality.
7. Reputation of alma mater.
8. Positive reference by previous Korean employer by phone.
9. Degree of submissiveness in interview.
10. Experience and qualifications.

I've helped several of my employers hire new teachers and they have all varied slightly. But, everytime, the overall image of the candidate has been seen as way more important than the ability of the person.

Aww, I was hoping I was going to the land of the morning calm and the freakin' amazing hottie white people. I guess I'm really going to stick out.

Zing!

Sorry. Blame the whiskey.

I wouldn't say being good-looking pays as much as being ugly (unpresentable)/ overweight counts against you.

If they consider you good looking - you will get away with murder - as for Koreans obsession with good looks - it is a country stacked high with mirrors!

I don't think the bar is set high though for men whereas for women the bar is set too high - shame! Laughing

No. Most of the ads I've seen only want people with F-4 visas.

I was gonna go with "who you know", "reputation", and "percieved qualifications(elite college)" as being far more important.

Everyone who has a "awesome" job here has more or less mentioned the above....I haven't met any good looking people who have an amazing job and claimed it was looks.

Maybe the hagwon looking to hire for a first year newbie gives a 100k a month bonus for being a hottie, but your not gonna get the awesome jobs on looks alone.

It's the other way around...hagwons will hire some of the fuggliest, overweight women around....If your a women, I think your a shoe in by default unless your Indian or asian(without an F-4).

I've seen some beautiful women who have hagwon jobs here and they have normal positions it seems, not working at some elite hagwon making 3 million a month for looking like a model.

It's because ugly women work harder.
