Hey..

If I download and burn a copy of Windows to a DVD, and then install it, besides saving my files and whatnot on an external HD and following the directions, is there anything else I need to do?

Do I need to re-install drivers? If so, where would I get them? Should I be able to access the internet immediately upon installing windows, or could there be problems with that?

I really appreciate any advice/suggestions you could give me..

Do you have a cd-key??? You will be asked to enter that upon installation...then yes, you will need to install drivers...for your graphics card, sound card etc....if you dont have the cd's you will need to go to the manufacturers website and download them from there...you should be able to browse straight away, may need to setup the network connections wizard first if connecting through a router.

Yes, you'll need to reinstall motherboard and video card drivers as well as fire wall and anti-virus. You should be able to connect to the internet right away though so I wouldn't worry about stocking up. XP has a database of generic drivers built in, so things like your network card will be setup as soon as windows installs I can only assume Vista is the same. XP only needs a CD, not a DVD. Make sure you burn the disk with a program that can turn a disk image into proper image of the disk (eg. expressburn), otherwise you may just end up with an .iso on a disk that you won't be able to boot from. Also, you'll want to set your CD drive above your c:\ drive in boot priority in the bios.
