I just got back a few days ago from a one-month trip to Thailand...all I can say is, WoW! In the spirit of George Carlin's classic piece called Baseball vs. Football...I'd like to introduce a little thing called Thailand vs. Korea. Rant Warning! Take it lightly...
In Thailand, it's people are so warm and happy, it is often referred to as the land of smiles...in Korea, well, ever been on a subway at 7am? or 10 am? or 3pm? Anytime at all?
In Thailand, old ladies will sell you chicken on the street, an arm, a leg, whatever you want...in Korea, the old ajummas will jab and stab you in the stomach and spine with their elbows, arms and legs just to get on a bus before you.
In Thailand, the kids play soccer and other sports as they converse with their friends in a healthy social atmosphere...in Korea, they type to their "terminal friend" starcraftmaster00387 to let them know they are getting attacked.
In Thailand, you can ride big dumb animals into jungles, across rivers and feed them peanuts...in Korea, you can't ride the big dumb animals anywhere but you can find them grazing at Taco Bell or Burger King on base.
In Thailand, for no cover charge and only a dollar a beer you can see attractive females do some amazing shows...in Korea, you can pay a $10 cover and $5 a beer to watch a Russian man take off his pajamas.
In Thailand, you can ride the sky train and see the whole city as it transports you from one part of the city to the next...in Korea, you are stuck in a dark tunnel cramped up against some old man with soju breath.
In Thailand, upon arrival, immigration will mark in your passport, "Welcome to the Kingdom of Thailand" and the man at immigration will say "have a great time"...upon leaving Korea, immigration will make me miss my first flight and insist I pay a penalty because their immigration office made a mistake and forgot to mark cancel on my E-2 visa stamp.
In Thailand, upon my first hour of arrival I decided to get a 2-hour Thai massage for $7...in Korea, upon my first hour of arrival, I saw 200 people rioting outside a building.
In Thailand, in the winter you can go wake boarding, jet skiing and surfing...In Korea, in the winter, everyone locks themselves up in a pc bang.
In Thailand, you can buy a DVD for $2 and watch it 1,000 times...in Korea, you can pay $10 to watch a DVD once.
In Thailand, nobody fishes for compliments because they are happy, content and secure with their country and it's people...in Korea, how many times a week does someone ask you how great you think their ______ is?
In Thailand, a taxi driver will tell you that the girl you are with is beautiful and give you a big smile...in Korea, the taxi driver will shout out the window in Korean as he drives away that the girl I am with is a no good ho' because she is with me.
In Thailand, everyone is so accepted that they'll even have Cabaret shows for gay people all done in public...in Korea, the population is so blindly obtuse that many believe there are no gays in Korea.
In Thailand, nobody ever makes outrageous pompous claims like chicken satay cures cancer...in Korea, "Our Kim chi is so healthy, it will destroy sars...hey after I'm done with my kim chi , can you light my cigarette?"
In Thailand, they combine a variety of food culture together to have various tastes and outstanding dishes...in Korea, "Our red chili paste is the best, let's put it in everything and forget about combining anything from the outside world."
In Thailand, to navigate around, a helpful tool would be the Lonely Planet guide...in Korea, you need the Lonely Country (insert rimshot here)
In Thailand, they are loved and endured by the asian community and as poor as they are, they are not in competition with anyone...in Korea, the Koreans hate all their neighbors and are envious and jealous, filled with hate and disdain for a country whose people are happy and who kick their ass at everything on a continuous basis. (Five letter word, starts with J)
BUT, ENGLISH TEACHERS IN THAILAND MAKE $10 AN HOUR, AND ENGLISH TEACHERS IN KOREA MAKE $30 OR MORE...so I will gladly "serve my time" in a society that hates me, send money home, and look forward to long vacations in the land of smiles.
Thanks for your time...

From this, we might conclude:
1. Korean massage therapists are better paid, and hence less mired in poverty, than their Thai counterparts, and-
2. Koreans are more likely to challenge their government's policies than are Thais. |

looking at the gloomy faces on the subway today and wishing I HAD done that visa run to Cambodia I started thinking about how these countries are so different it's humorous. It all came out pretty quick. Hope you had some laughs. |

I'll be in Pattaya in February for 3 weeks of sunshine, cheap beer, and no worries what-so-ever. |

Doing a visa run in Thailand is two edged sword..
It's awesome because it's Thailand and it's an amazingly good place to visit..
It sucks because it makes Korea look like the earth's anus when you get back..
I never found anyone who could crack me up like a few thai people I met in Chiang Mai.. (even though there english was limited)
The sense of humour seems similar to the west to me.. |

There's nothing I love more in the world than a comfortable toilet... I mean, kick back with my laptop and cruise the net while I'm taking care of business... I really do enjoy the simple pleasures in life. |
