Does anyone know if the FBI check needs to be authenticated for a California apostille? I requested one a few days ago but did not get an authenticated copy.
Thanks in advance! |

For CA in order to apostille your CBC, you need to get it notarized, take the notary to your county courthouse and get the certificate saying it is a certified notary the go to the nearest secretary of state office for the apostille. |

You do need to get it authenticated. When you order your FBI check you have to specify on the application that you need it authenticated. Then take it to the notary then the apostille-I called and spoke with someone at the FBI (yes, there is a line where someone actually answers the phone!) and they confirmed that. |

Ok, if that's the case then I need to send out for another one but where on the application can you request one? there isn't exactly a space for that or a box you can check off. |

Nope-there's no box or anything. The woman I spoke with just told me to handwrite "please include authentification <FBI seal> with authorized signature" at the top of the regular FBI application form. The following section is from the FBI's website:
9. Does the FBI provide apostilles*?
(*An apostille is a certification that a document that has been legalized or authenticated by the issuing agency through a process in which various seals are placed on the document.)
The CJIS Division will authenticate U.S. Department of Justice Order 556-73 fingerprint search results for international requests by placing the FBI seal and the signature of a division official on the results if requested at the time of submission. Documents prepared in this way may then be sent to the U.S. Department of State by the requester to obtain an apostille if necessary. This procedure became effective on January 25, 2010 and will apply only to documents finalized after that date. Requests to authenticate previously processed results will not be accepted. This procedure replaces the letter formerly provided by the CJIS Division that indicated the service was not provided. The apostille service is not provided to individuals requesting search results for Canadian immigration, as it is not required for this purpose.
Hope this helps! Good luck! |

Before I go and spend more money on the same thing I just did, just in case, you're from California and you verified this for California?
I've heard conflicting reports on this subject in different threads on this forum... |

It cost 8$ and is done at the Department of State
Authentications office
(A/OPR/GSM/AUTH)
518 23rd street, N.W.
State Annex 1
Washington DC 20520
There is a website for it as well.

Sorry for not getting back to this sooner, stevensalty (guess my notification setting was messed up). Yes, I'm from CA and that is what the FBI and guy at the Secretary of State's office (in Sacramento) told me regarding the authentification. My best friend (also from CA) ordered hers w/o the authentification, got it back and now has to send for another one. I heard that if they haven't begun to process your request yet (which if you just sent it in Nov, they have not) you can call and request for that to be added to your paperwork. It's worth a shot before you request a whole new one (unless you already did). Good luck! |

Options:
Without the seal and signature of Kimberly (FBI signer) on FBI check.
------------------------------------------------------------------
A.) If you don't have the seal and signature, just notarize and apostille it. If you're not near the SOS, you can mail it in. It takes 2-3 weeks to process.
B.) If you're near the SOS, just go there.
C.) If you need it on an expedited basis, you can use apostille service such as Apostille Pros. They notarize and apostille for you. 1-2 business day.
With the seal and signature of Kimberly (FBI signer) on FBI check
------------------------------------------------------------------
A.) Mail it to DoS. It takes about 3-4 weeks. It's in D.C.
B.) Use apostille service to expedited the process. They'll do it in 3-5 business days. www.apostillepros.com
If you need it in a rush.

Not all cities need to go to the county courthouse.

So just to clarify. If I receive my Federal CBC with the seal and signature, and I am in California. (Really Close to Sacramento) I have to get it notarized (along with Diploma) And then take them both to Sacramento to get an Apostille? Thanks in advance. |

So I'm pretty confused about all this. Can someone walk me through the steps I need to take? I'm in Korea at the moment, FYI. I have all the forms filled out and printed, but I haven't gotten my finger prints yet due to crappy weather. So, from beginning to end, what do I need to do? |

Eh, I got mine back with a seal/signature as requested and just sent it Washington DC for an apostille.
I'm from CA as well but I did not want to risk getting it apostilled by the SOS in CA. I'm doing the degree through them of course.
I've heard conflicting stories on whether Korean Immi accepts apostilled CBC's done by the SOS (and not on the federal level).
Best to just play it safe instead of gambling on having to do it all over again to save a weeks time. |

People in South Korea said as long as an apostille is affixed to it one way or another, it should be accepted. It was posted on this forum. They just want an apostille on it.
