The Politics of Anti-Americanism has been apparant to at least some people who've watched the I.I.H.F. competitions involving Team U.S.A. and Team Canada when the tournaments have been held in Canada: Saskatoon, Sk; Red Deer, Alb.; Vancouver, B.C.; Sydney and Halifax, N.S.; Montreal and Quebec City, P.Q.; and, Ottawa's Civic Centre and Scotia Bank Place are, collectively, our frame-of-reference.

Let's cut to the 2008-2009 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship. Here, a combo of cruddy and, most likely, anti-American referees; hostile, anti-U.S.A. fans (no surprise here because one could strongly argue that this has been the norm in World Junior Tourneys since the U.S. first competed at the tourney when a high school all-star team represented the country at the 1978 tournament in Montreal, P.Q.) hell-bent on getting under the skins of the U.S. players; a consequently demoralised goalie; and, against all of the opposing national sides (especially, though, Team Canada and Team Slovakia) a bunch of teenagers from the U.S. getting screwed by the refs and psyched out to-the-max by the hostile, almost entirely Canadian crowd, who booed and sometimes cursed the boys from U.S.A. whenever they went near the puck and, sometimes, when they committed the crime of stepping onto the ice.

All together, it is not far-fetched to argue that must have been a huge factor in the emotional collapse of 22 teenaged guys who are, when you think abou it, very, very, very good at the sport of Ice Hockey; they're unlucky because they ran into a, you know, collective wall, if you will, that, historically in my relatives' nation, goes to seemingly extreme lengths to snuff out whatever talent-based chances Team U.S.A. might possess at winning even the Bronze Medal.

My Mom's side of the family and nearly all of my other blood relatives are from that nation. They've remarked to me, you know, from time to time about how well they've been treated by the so-called Yanks when in country. Moreover, I can not find nor have I experienced even one situation wherein citizens of Canada were singled out, as it were, for wearing the Team Canada jersey.

It's a sport. Keep it cool.

Salaries are higher in the U.S.; unsportsmanship is tied to Nationalism.

Cordially,

Yeah, no doubt there's a lot of anti americanism, especially in hockey. WE are dealing with a hockey mentality. Canadians boo the American anthem. But I've also seen Americans boo the Canadian anthem.

ive been watching the WJHC and i would say that although there probably would have been anti-US feelings, the american team only amplified the feeling because of their hot dog antics and cocky attitudes on the ice when they were beating canada 3-0 in the first period. Skating by the canadian bench with their gloves to their ears, and then again when the canadians tied it up 3-3 and were skating past the american bench to get to their bench, some american douche bag jabs the goalscorer with his stick. I know we are talking about kids, but, come on, very unprofessional. And, then the rant, by the American coach after the lost, only put the cherry on the top of the completely unprofessional and sore loser bowl of crap that was the american team this year.

i think canadians dont like the americans because the americans have gotten really good at WJHC, so we need to hate our rivals. But clearly, there is a lot of political and personal hatred at the games, for whatever reason.

Boorish tribalism is pretty much par-for-the-course in hockey. In the 1980s, during a game against a Russian team, the owner of Maple Leaf Gardens actually put up a notice on the electronic scoreboard telling the audience to boo the Soviet anthem.

Americans watch hockey?

Canadians can be as anti american as they like when it comes to hockey. it is a highly irrelevant sport.

Okay. I was just saying that I know about the type of people who are a-holes about sports, but I also have a mild interest in sports, and........oh my god!! I'm jerky!!

I'm doomed!!! (The longer I stay in korea, the less I care, but I'm still somewhat interested in the NBA, NFL and MLB.)

Ever seen a soccer game? Especially ones played in Latin America? Hockey is a tea party compared to those matches.

Don't be so sure about that, especially this year:
