|
|
I can't get over how the functionality of this site sucks big time. Particularly the search. I wonder if there's some procedures that I'm not aware of here.
When I do a search, for example for 'Suwon'.....I get a listing of post threads some of which (just a few) contain the word 'suwon'.
And perhaps I should mention that I don't even always get any response at all when I input a search term. Nothing.........just nothing lots of times.
After clicking on one of them I find that I can neither 'back' button to where I came from or simply 'close' the screen and be where I started from. In both cases, I get knocked out of the site completely. Is that totally crazy or what?
Doesn't Dave make some money off this site that he can afford to have one that's a bit more user friendly?
Regards,
Art |

If you don't like it, so elsewhere seems to be the message. |
It's a brilliant tactic to train you as to what to expect when you get to K-land. |

We have been complaining about the fact that the site is slow and the search function doesn't work. The site was having PHP Errors a year ago and that seems to have gone away. It's completely up to Dave Sperling and he hasn't been willing to do much of anything in terms of improving the forums.
The search function is hit or miss. Some days it's fine others it's worthless.
My understanding is the website is hosted and all the maintenance is done in the US, so it has nothing to do with Korea. |

And the thing about it is that another site is now growing huge as a result. At this rate, Dave's will be 2nd rate and eventually lose much of its money-making ability. |

Well that's the thing with being #1, someone is always striving to be better. My guess is eventually another site will come along to rival this one and/or top it. It's just a matter of time. |

I'd say you are being way too nice by saying, "hit or miss," or "some days it's fine." Never in my experience has it worked.
Knowing that, what is worse is when someone would try to use/post between 9:45 and 11:00 p.m. Korea time. COMPLETELY WORTHLESS, to say the least.
DAVE should just shut this section of the site down so he can make his money via the job postings which is what must be happening during that time.
DAVE should be honest and simply tell us that this part of the site is next to worthless during these times. I mean don't you think we should know, instead of wasting OUR time waiting for nothing to happen while attempting to post? I have given up during these times, I suggest all others NOT to ATTEMPT to make any posts during these times. SURF ELSEWHERE!!!
But then, why should DAVE care about OUR time?
I don't think DAVE ever asks for suggestions on how we might think he could improve this site BECAUSE he probably doesn't really care what we think. Well, YOU TOO, so there!!! |

Maybe I am being generous, but the search function has worked the last two times I've tried it. Then again, I say that and tomorrow it won't. Most of the time when I use it, it isn't for me personally, but to try to help someone who is new who is looking for information that gets burried by the flamewars of others.
Many people have made the observation about it being slow in the evenings. I agree with that. About 9pm you notice a big difference in how fast things load compared with 8:30.
Like I said, some other website will likely come along and figure out a better setup and people will flock there. It may not happen tomorrow or next week, but it probably will eventually. |

Search function somewhat works if you don't have more than 2 words and better if you only have 1 word, but every thread that has only one of your search words in just one of its' posts will come up. Try, "Winter camp," if you're looking for Winter camp lesson ideas. I wish they'd tweak the search to allow you to only search titles including your search term; not posts. One geeky user tricked it out a while back by writing some code where you could click a link he provided to use a powerful search function that utilized Google, but I lost it.
Ah, the slowness, especially when posting. One trick I learned is when you click, "submit," and the page just sits there doing nothing, it actually posted which explains why there are so many double posts. After clicking, "submit," once, you can click back and hit F5 to refresh the post and often see your new post come up where it actually was received even though it appeared otherwise. No guarantees so you wanna copy what you wrote to save it if you have to try again.
Other times, the site just won't do anything and really is stuck. This is a real let down.
Uh, what's in it for Dave, a for-profit ESL job listing site, to host a free forum? Shouldn't there be a non-profit organization or association for ESL teachers to join that would host the forums and free career related information? I know Korea doesn't allow this sort of thing nor do most other Asian countries. Most professions that include computer users have associations which not only act as information and discussion forums hosts, but also are networking avenues within the specified scope of interest relevant to it's members and those trying to get in a career. Well, Dave's ESL cafe is just this, but it's substandard quality of forum software functioning.
What I'm asking is why isn't there an ESL teacher association that better represents and hosts a site for ESL teachers? |

I wrote the custom Google Search for ESL Cafe, along with Greasemonkey scripts that change the Dave's Banner/Search link to search using it instead of relying on the default one built into the site.
People have been reporting that it almost completely solves any searching problems with Dave's ESL cafe, and does so in a fairly convenient way.
Some commenters above have already referenced posts in which this searching solution was discussed.
Alternatively, you can get all the info here about how to get started searching Dave's like a pro.
Do keep in mind though that mine is not the only possible solution, and you can always just use plain old Google to search any site, including this one.
Happy Searching!
