I have been browsing this board for some time now...and I have finally grown the backbone to drop everything and go to Korea.
(The economy and finding a job had a lot to do with it...)

Background info: Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Ethen Very Happy Hopefully I'll get to meet some of the fine teachers that are still left in Korea. I am a recent graduate for UC IRVINE with a Major GPA of 3.505 in International Studies. I have about 7 years of private tutoring experience, and 2 years with academies in the US (The Princeton Review, Pace Academy). I am also Korean and can speak/write/read Korean fluently. I would like to leave as soon as possible....

NOW...with all this considered: Is it reasonable for me to find a UNI job?

If so: What is the current salary range I should expect?
If not: What are some of the higher paying hagwon's that are reputable besides CDI?

And to top this all off: What are some good agencies to work with?
I just contacted (today) Korvia Recruiting and ESL-Planet. Any other good ones or specific recruiters you guys want to recommend?

You pretty much have to be here to interview in person univ. jobs (not sure about the rare Ph.D.-level positions, though). They also tend to want at least some Korean experience. Our univ. throws even MA/TESOL applicants in the trash if they don't meet the above criteria.

Get your MA or get over here with your BA, work a year in a hakwon, then switch to a university in the sticks until you get some experience, and then try and get a decent university gig.

Major in totally unrealated dicipline
No experience
No advanced degree

What are you thinking?

LOL, alrighty then! thanks for the info on that. I have now narrowed it down to pretty much a private hagwon. Thanks!

TPR Korea would almost certainly be interested in someone with your credentials.

My uni just went through the hiring process. They receive so many applications from people with decent qualifications living in Korea, and they can interview these people easily. So they hire people they can interview.

um...no? TPR has decent, above-average salaries for people with the right qualifications. they tend to choose korean-americans/canadians who are bilingual to head some of their programs - meaning higher pay, more influence, etc. essentially, you would skip the steps that most people have to take to get a higher-paying/high-level position, simply because you're korean-american, went to a decent school, and speak the language. it's worth looking into, and would be a great stepping stone if you want to make the transition to university instructor after a year or so.

EDIT: since you asked about salaries, the TPR gig could (feasibly) get you 3 million (+) per month with a 30 hour work week.

OP will be working the same shitty jobs we do and wonder why the hell he bothered being so proud of his GPA and tutoring experience.

Being Korean will probably land him less offers than the rest of us to boot.

What is TPR? Do they pay a housing allowance or provide housing? If not, why work there? The OP will have an F4 visa and will be able to work at pretty much any hakwon for 2.2-2.5 with housing and make up the difference with one private gig. Or take a part-time hakwon/public after school job and do the rest in privates.

Influence? Higher level position? 30 hour weeks? LOL. Hell, might as well 40 hour weeks and teach at a company training facility! Equally crappy.

TPR = The Princeton Review (Korea); test prep and specialty courses. the salary figure didn't include the housing allowance they provide.

i'm not saying i would take it Wink, but there are plenty of suckers bumping around at 2.3 who would jump at a chance to work as a coordinator for a good company and make above-average wages. on an F4, he could do both - gain experience a few steps above the rest of the workers, and moonlight for that "company training facility." hell, the guy was asking about CDI.
