The vast majority (if not all) of PS contracts contain a clause something to the effect - the employee will be required to work at an institution or training centre during summer and winter recess periods when regular classes are not in session. If your employer is the POE, this means they can (technically) send you anywhere in the province although it's highly unlikely they would try to send you to a school far from your area because of housing logistics.

There is a chance you will be asked to work at a provincial training centre because they have dorms. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence and creativity can get out of this.

If you don't want to do overnight camps, just say "No." They can't force you to work 'overtime'.

some actually do have overnighters but they are usually optional - you can do a teachers' class or something else back here in the district.

but stating so up front isn't going to help much - it's only after they have the NET that they start planning these things and every year may be different.

All "overnighters" are optional.

In my first year at my present school the Ks took it as 'given' that I would do a two-week (Mon.-Fri), overnight camp with elementary students. My co-teacher/handler presented me with a schedule and said I would be paid 1.6 million over and above regular salary.

CM: "No."
CT: Shocked
CM: "What's the problem?"
CT: "I don't understand."
CM: "Ok... I'll simplify it for you... 'No'."
CT: "Why are you saying 'No'?"
CM: "Three reasons: number one is that I don't want to teach elementary kids, number two is that I don't want to eat cafeteria food and sleep on the floor and number three is that I don't need the money. Tell them 'Thanks, but no thanks'." (this really confused her) Wink
CT: "But your contract says you must work during vacation."
CM: "Yes, but Korean law says 'overtime' is optional."
CT: "Oh... I don't know... I will speak to school inspector Mr. Park."
CM: "Ok... thanks... I'd appreciate that. Tell him cruisemonkey says 'Thanks, but no thanks'."

That was the last I ever heard of the matter (and I've never been asked again). Cool

I'm doing the overnight Winter camp next week. When they 1st announced it in November, it was an offer for 6 hours a day at 30,000 Won an hour for 3 weeks of January and go home every evening to go to the gym and to my bed. Then in 1st part of December they cut it down to 2 weeks at 4 hours day still not being an over nighter, but team teaching with another FT which i looked forward to working with said FT. BTW, I miss working the other westerners. Then in mid December it was announced to be 4 hours a day over night camp for 1 week each by ourselves with the email explanation, "there must be some kind of misunderstanding," to announce the change. Talk about bait and switch kind of deal.

Now, the guy who taught it this week tells me that not only did he teach the agreed upon 4 hours a day, but they expected him to teach about 11 hours a day in a classroom and he didn't have that many activities scheduled though some activities were provided such as kite flying, personal hygiene and eating meals. I'm bringing plenty of different games and movies to augment the 16 hours of English class I have planned to fill in the gaps. The good thing is we get our own rooms. I'm kinda bumming out on having to leave early Monday morning to be gone all week, especially with some other things going on right now I need to be tending to, but Friday will come soon enough.

To all potential K-PS newbies:
There is one very important word in your English vocabulary - "No".
Practice saying it before you get here. Wink

LOL. Personal Hygiene. Yes I know kids are terrible at it if they're not supervised, but I don't have to supervise that part of the activities and I'll go off some place else to be on my own while they play in the shower.

I do get my own room and will be finished around 9PM each night. Yes, 9PM; not 2:30 PM as originally planned. It's a 9 to 9 gig, but it's only or 5 days 4 nights for extra money on top of my salary so I can't bitch that much, but the changing it for the worse part after I agreed just stuck an ice cold needle in my ass.

In K-land, personal hygiene = mirror.

How about the adults? I have 'seen' the administrative office of my school shit in the faculty 'squat', not flush and walk out without washing his hands. Now every time I touch an official piece of paper I feel unclean. Wink

On the bright side... you can always teach the kids how to properly blow-dry their pubes. Rolling Eyes

I knew people who had one of these kinds of deals... they were promised 700,000 won but only got 500,000 deposited into their bank accounts.

I was still jealous cause I didn't get to do the camp though. Embarassed I'd really been looking forward to getting away from my school for a bit and would have gladly slept in a dorm and worked 9-9 for that privilege, and 500,000 won.

Are you 'deskwarming'? If so, why don't you just leave? Is someone taking attendance? As a teacher, shouldn't you be looking after the attendance roll? Cool

It's my firm belief that anyone who actually wants to do overnight camps is on the verge of 'going postal'.Wink

Shocked Teachers at your school have to have to check-in and check-out... what does that entail? Do you have to sign/initial something?

Why has no one fermented a revolution, instigated a mutiny or 'fragged' the v.p.?

Right on. That's cool. Many PS teachers, especially in the cities and urban areas don't get extra pay for camps or can't get a camp, but just have to desk warm all Winter and Summer break.
