They are now 4 days late on my pay and I have not heard anything about when I will be paid. What should I do? |

How long have you been there?
Is this your first month?
Is this the first time you've been paid late?
POST THIS INFO.
1) being paid late is NOT an option.
How did you find out you were being paid late?
-did someone text you?
-tell you in person
-call you and tell you?
It's important.
Give more details. |

Ok, I have been there 2 months. Last pay wasnt late, but....I got paid in cash with no receipt and they claim they still owe me money from my first check.
I found out I was paid late because I havent been paid and its 5 days past my payday.
I was told on the 31st that they are having financial issues. I talked with them today, no word on pay. |

BS
Are you the only FT?
How many kids do you teach a week?
You have to remember that as a FT, the moms pay for you ONE MONTH BEFORE YOU STEP INTO THE CLASSROOM AND TEACH.
The hagwon gets money for you one month in advance.
You should never NOT GET paid late unless the students drop off dramatically.
"financial issues": is the same BS I've had from every crappy hagwon that ever paid me late.
Put the "the moms paid for me in advance", in their face.
Then, if you don't get paid.... go to work, do your thing, but file with the labor board.
They've broken contract.
Post another post saying you have not been paid and "what should I do: I'm NEED HELP"
that will get the ttompatz's and other longtimers to help you.
wait until sunday night or monday.
I'm just an insomniac. I wish I could help you more, but I don;t have the knowledge that the long-long timers have.
Good luck. |

OP. It is quite probable that your school really is having financial issues. Many schools fail every year, even if they've been in business for a long time.
It is NOT true that parents pay one month in advance for your classes, so don't use that bit of disinformation. You must, of course, insist on being paid, but if the school is broke, it could be impossible. And if you demand payment disrespectfully and using stupid, untrue information, when the school is already in financial trouble, you will create a rift that will cause you greater financial and emotional harm.
The truth is that parents recieve an envelope requesting payment on the first day of each month of enrollment or on the final day preceeding. They normally pay within two weeks, which means that they will have already taken half of the classes prior to paying. However, many families pay late. Often families will pay a school one or two months behind, but the school will wait patiently. Some families face financial difficulties of their own, especially now with the economy falling, and fall many months behind. Some never pay and leave large balances due.
It is important about the number of students you are teaching and whether or not that number is stable, rising or falling. Of course, your school has a lot of expenses outside of your salary and they could be losing money even if you're teaching 100 students each week. If you are teaching fewer than 50, it is quite likely that your school is losing money.
There are many outward signs of a school that is losing money, if you know what to look for. |

I am an insomniac too but not through lack of financial planning. Most directors hit hard times because they bite off more than they can chew. He/She'll have substantial debts or things to pay and others are asking for it now, earlier than expected causing cashflow problems. You could in this situation easily be without income yourself as caught up in the chain effect. Well, I'd go with the advice of talking properly with the one who gives the money and if you get the runaround either then and there work out a way to get released and so you don't lose a visa or go with the labor board suggestions. |

Insist on being paid, or bend over...
your choice.
Your students moms, unconditionally, pay, one month in advance.
If you are not being paid on time for two months in... you will NEVER be paid on time, PERIOD.
Your management sucks and can not run a business. |

The above bit of info is just stupid and not true.

This part is true, however, and explains the former.
One more bit of info. Not only do parents NOT regularly pay in advance (maybe 1 in 50 will pay prior to the first day of a teaching month). But, if a parent decides to pull his or her child out of the school, the school must refund any payment for classes not yet taken. |

payment is made in advance
period
if you are not getting paid. lay down. or don't. we know what the recruiters want you to do. I am not a recruiter. in the end. It doesn't matter to me.

PS-when I said ask the long timers I meant the LONG timers who know how to fight.
I've been here five + years. There are guys who have been here two years with more knowledge than me on these matters.
Like I said before, ask TTompatz. He's knowledgable about e-2 problems. I'm not. |

There are guys who've been here 5 minutes who know more than you, John.
The fact is that I've been here over a decade and have more than 8 years of Korean hogwan accounting experience. John, you are giving people here BS when they don't need it and it won't help them. |

some things make me wonder as well...
did they pay for your airfare upfront, or is it going to be "reimbursed"?
how large is the school? being the only FT may make a difference
how many times have you met the director (or manager- whoever controls your pay) about this issue? getting paid late is not good getting paid in cash should be a red flag (no pension, medical)
i would say, go with your gut about this situation. it seems like you like your employer do you? can you put up with this happening every month? because it will |

Getting paid in cash is not a red flag. It is normal in Korea. There are no checking accounts available here. Many teachers, especially in the first few months, have no bank account and have to get paid in cash since a wire transfer would not be possible. Some teachers prefer to get paid in cash. At my current school, every teacher has been paid in cash for many years. They all have the option to get a wire transfer instead, but all have preferred to be paid in cash. We all have pension, medical, vacations, large, fully furnished 2 bdr condos (single housing) and lots of great fringes.
If you want to know if your school is in financial trouble, you have to look for the signs:
Other people hanging around when they should be out working, such as the school van drivers. They are looking to get paid too.
Unusual business type visitors - probably collecting late payments.
Collection phone calls. May be hard for you to know if you don't speak any Korean.
Various difficulties with school copiers, computers, computer access, phones, other equipment that don't get fixed or utilities not working. Cash shortage unable to make payments or repairs.
Shortages of basic school supplies: paper, chalk, markers ... stuff you need every day but you're always out and they buy in small quantities if at all.
Of course, if you know other teachers are not getting paid, or quitting due to a lack of pay, or if you have small numbers of students per teacher, these are more obvious signs. |

basically,
if you do not get paid on time in the first month.... you won't in the following months.
If you do not make a 'stink' about it now, you'll be a victim.
Regardless of what is said here, by whoever, the parents pay for you upfront. There is no excuse for you NOT receiving your wages! That's all I'm saying.
Maybe someone here knows you and employed you and is trying to convince you that it is ok to pay you late.
Check the PM again. You do not have to settle for this BS, esp with an American boss.
If you do NOT get your PAY MONDAY. Get a letter of release.
Your boss is NOT Korean. HE IS AMERICAN.
He has broken your contract. I WILL GUARANTEE YOU A JOB.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE FULL PAY MONDAY, CONTACT ME! I"M NOT KIDDING.
THERE IS NEVER AN EXCUSE FOR LATE PAY.
The above poster is probably your boss.
If they screw you, I will, personally, walk you through through the labor board, pension, process... And, you will be sponsored on an E-2 making 2.5.
Really. This is a one time shot. Demand your pay. Call that MF NOW. If he won;t give it, call me. PM |
