So I'm planning to go to Guatemala next month. Starting in the Mexican border town of Tapachula, then planning to go straight into Guatemala. Planning to do the common tourist things there: Antigua, Tikal, and a couple other spots. Just curious if anyone on Dave's had any recommendations.

Also going to returning to Chiapas at the end of the trip, for about a week. If anyone has suggestions for there, I'm all ears. Thanks in advance.

Take the volcano trip in Antigua.

Go to Lake Atitlan and try the fish soup (caldo piscine, something like that [my Spanish is nearly non-existent]).

if your going to be in mexico i really recomend you hit , San Miguel de Ayende, and Guanajuato. Some of the most beautiful city's in Mexico, if the weather is still sunny, hit Playa del Carmen,, its really cheep to travel over.

Do you mean San Miguel Allende? And unfortunately I don't think i'll be venturing that far north into Mexico, doubt my friends and I will go beyond Chiapas in Mexico.

Flores is a very nice town to relax in while visiting Tikal and much cheaper than staying right in the park (a highly overrated experience, I think Tikal is best in the afternoon after all the sunrise crowds leave). I would reccomend a few days there (2-3). It has enough cheap little excursions (canoes, some day hikes, swimming) and can offer some quiet relief from travel.

Belize is nice if you like diving and drinking...but if you don't it is a definate miss. As it's very expensive (relatively)

Semuc Champey in Guatemala is a beautiful place with pools and waterfalls and various rock formations and a logical step between Flores and Antigua

Also if you really dig Mayan ruins Honduras is not far from Antigua and Copas Ruinas (I think that name is wrong) has much better examples of Mayan Carving than Tikal, but the temples are much less grand.

Get off the beaten path. Easier said than done.
There are trips with guides you can take deep into
the jungle, away from the pyramids at Tikal.

In Chiapas, take local transport to the end of the roads
and get to the conservation area, Selva de Lacadona.
That big lake is amazingly clear and clean as there
are only native villages that surround it. Again, you will
need local guides and porters to get there.

Have a blast! I did. And watch out for Marcos!

Flores was very nice. We got to Tikal pretty early, only a few other people in the Grand Plaza when we got there. It was pretty sweet.

Semuc Champay was also great, very happy I went there.

And did the volcano hike that Beaver suggested. Ruined my shoes but it was worth it Smile.

I had a good time in Guatemala, but keep your wits about you and be careful hiking, especially on little known trails. Robbery is very common.
