In proper hijacking form, I posted my query on another thread. However, I did not get any response. I thought I would start a new thread to resolve my question.

The other thread can be found here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=143936

There is a lot of talk about the number of hours for a particular TESOL/TEFL/WHATEVER course. My coursework did not entail a number of specific hours like one would find with many short-term or online program. I am wondering what my program is actually worth here in Korea. How do prospective employers view my program compared with the other programs that are mentioned so often?

In short, I took graduate level courses at American University in Washington, DC. I earned a TESOL Certificate which constitutes what is basically half of a Master's degree in TESOL. I took 5 courses. They were each 3 credits. My courses were English Language Teaching I, English Language Teaching II, Second Language Acquisition, Teaching Pronunciation, and Linguistics. A link to my program can be found here: http://www.american.edu/tesol/

Any thoughts? What would this do for me if I decided to make a transition to public schools? Would it hold any weight with universities?

I only ask because the coursework was extremely difficult and the curriculum was rigorous.

With regard to transition to the PS system, it will bump you one pay level IF you can prove it was a 100+ hour course. From your description it 'sounds' as though that may be difficult.

That is exactly what my question is. What constitutes 100+ hours?

5 classes * 3 hours per week * 15 weeks = 225 hours
-This is just class time. It does not include time spent with assignments, tutoring, class observations, and reading.

Is this what we are talking about here?

Can you provide this information on a piece of paper (like a cert.)?

If not, the school probably won't care. Not saying that is right, but it seems to be the general way things are done.

Yes, I have a certificate. Let me see ... Here is what it says:

American University

Chartered by Act of Congress of the United States of America
February twenty-fourth, eighteen hundred and ninety-three

certifies through the TESOL Program of the Department of Language and Foreign Studies
MY NAME

successfully completed all requirements for a 15-credit certificate in the field of
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Unfortunately, your certificate does not have the 'magic' number on it.

Well, I have a pretty good relationship with the coordinator of the program. Do you think a letter would help? I could have him write anything. In fact, I could probably write it and have him sign off on it.

I don't see why that wouldn't equate to a 100+ hours course. Show them the transcripts and writing down how many hours each course took. Also get that letter from your prof. explaining it out.

It's worth a try - you have nothing to loose.

Unfortunately, because you will be dealing with a K-eauracy, linear 'western' logic does not apply.

Yeah, for that reason alone it's highly doubtful that's going to fly. Looks like 15 hours
