McDonald`s Korea expands coffee business
http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/NEWKHSITE/data/html_dir/2009/01/13/200901130013.asp
McDonald`s Korea said yesterday it has officially began the expansion of its gourmet coffee business, adding greater competitive pressure to the local specialty coffee retail market.
The company said its expansion plans include introducing seven different flavors for its "McCafe" coffee brand. It believes its role would popularize premium coffee, whereas now the instant coffee mix market leads in consumer demand.
The growth of espresso retailing is accelerating as new competitors jump in with the ambition to snatch a share of the instant coffee market, which is now estimated to account for about 80 percent of domestic coffee consumption.
McDonald`s Korea says its competitive edge is in quality and pricing, where a cup would hover around the 2,000 won range. The company claims the price is 20 to 50 percent cheaper than other espresso coffee chains.
The local unit of the world`s largest burger chain has launched an advertisement campaign promoting its coffee as "a smart choice." Consumers will see aggressive McCafe television promotions and other visual marketing campaigns, such as through buses and subways.
Currently, U.S.-based Starbucks leads the market, followed by homegrown brand Hollys Coffee, in terms of number of stores.

Mcdonalds was giving out free coffee last week around Hyewha, it was pretty decent. Not the best, but it beats the instant coffee mixes.
I'm all about a 2,000 won cup of decent coffee n Korea- finally! Right when I leave, too |

Back home they have gourmet coffee at McDonald's, too. No idea how much it costs; I remember as a teenager about ten years ago it was about a dollar. I hope they didn't jack up the prices.
Even gas stations have gourmet coffees in tons of flavors. I know Sheetz had about a half-dozen flavors---man I miss French Vanilla coffee---and BP had four or five.
It's great that Starbucks and McDonald's, and others, have helped reinvigorate the coffee business here and in the US, but I hope this doesn't mean an even more expensive cup. |

Yeah McDonald's is trying really hard to get the Starbucks crowd.
They put up big billboards in Seattle with quips like "Fourbucks is dumb", etc.
McDonald's in Korea does have excellent brewed coffee. Dunkin' Donuts too. Both taste way better than the over-roasted, overpriced crap that Starbucks pushes. |

i hate to be a debbie downer, but coffee in korea has been a fairly consistent disappointment for me. no coffee here is good. [i have found two places that make tolerable lattes.] the only thing 7 flavors is going to do is cover up the actual taste of the coffee. yuck. |

"Is it impossible to get a cup of coffee-flavoured coffee, anymore, in this country? What happened with the coffee? Did I miss a fucking meeting with the coffee, huh? You can get every other flavour except coffee-flavoured coffee!"

Jules: Mmm! God damn, Jimmie! This is some serious gourmet shit! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some freeze-dried Taster's Choice, but he springs this serious gourmet shit on us! What flavor is this?
Jimmie: Knock it off, Jules.
Jules: What?
Jimmie: I don't need you to tell me how fucking good my coffee is, okay? I'm the one who buys it, I know how good it is. When Bonnie goes shopping, she buys shit. Me, I buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when I drink it, I want to taste it. But you know what's on my mind right now? It ain't the coffee in my kitchen... |

Coffee is a big money maker.
Oh, and if COMPETITION actually brings prices down then consumers benefit. |

Flavored coffee sucks.
And is anyone else annoyed when Dunkin Donuts puts cinnamon powder on top of their cappucino? I like cinnamon, but not when it's spoiling my coffee! |

If I had to choose who to buy coffee from and could only choose between McDonald's and Starbucks, I'd pay more at Starbucks simply because they treat their employees better, at least in the USA where they are based.
But if I buy coffee, mom and pop stores are the way to go. Both corporations have done enough damage to local businesses world wide and damage to other global issues.
I'll hold off on the reasons not to support McDonald's for now, unless someone wants me to repost it. |

The IMPORTANT thing is to have choices for consumers and competition that means lower prices. |
