Maybe it's the Korean exchange rate or the busy end of the year?
Anyhow, hope you had a good Christmas, BE. |

It has seemed like the boards have been stuck lately. Hardly any new threads for me to look through. Having said that, I barely ever start a thread. |

The MODs cleaned house several months back and many long-time posters were banned.....they used the porn scare last summer as the premise to kick many people off.....
Thats one of the reasons you don't see many of the old timers here as much or many of them now registered under new names. |

Have been gone long, so what was the "porn" scare? Some government agency threatened to shut down this site down because of the lewd postings?!
Surely there is worse on the internet, even from those sites/blogs/UCC originating in Korea. What made everyone leave, more specifically please. |

Well, new member registration was closed for a long time. Perhaps some people just gave up. |

Simply not true. We consider each case individually; we don't use any event as a "premise" to "clean house." If a long-time poster was banned, it was for one of two reasons:- That poster committed an egregious breach of the forum guidelines/TOS that warranted a permanent ban on its own;
- That poster engaged in a pattern of guideline/TOS violation and persisted in doing so despite warnings and/or temporary bans.
We don't ban people for the fun of it. Except for emergencies (e.g., porn spammers), bans are not decided by individual mods; rather, the issue is discussed and a consensus is reached.
Being an "old timer" doesn't give anyone carte blanche to disregard the rules. That being said, we don't go looking for people to ban; most people who get banned have committed a flagrant violation or a pattern of violations that garnered numerous complaints. |

The amount of threads that get deleted here with no word or explanation is simply staggering. Why contribute to a thread (and thus to a board) when there's a good chance your contribution will be erased?
I don't know about others, but a well reasoned reply takes a bit of time to construct and type out, so when a mod deletes a thread that has quite a few pages of good replies (but a few problematic ones), that's a lot of man-hours that gets thrown into the garbage.
Mods, if you must delete threads, can't you make a 'deleted thread' sticky and give us an account of who erased it, and the specific reason why? If you are unable to account for your actions in this way, there should be no reason to delete threads. If you come back with the reply that goes on about this being a private message board and if you don't like the rules then leave (ad nauseum) - then don't be surprised when people actually do.
That, and the general technical problems this board experiences are pretty frustrating. |

+1. Completely agree.
Speaking of deleted threads, recently Louie came out and said he was really Lastat. Didn't catch the particulars. Why was that thread deleted? I'm sure some people would be interested since many of us thought Lastat was dead. |

Being a "mod" however, does give you "carte blanche" to do anything you want.
Maybe people are just tired of it and looking for someplace with less mod Nazis |

When at all possible, we try to just split off posts that in some way violate TOS. However, it sometimes becomes rather complicated, especially when parts that violate TOS are intertwined in other posts. Not only does it take an inordinate amount of time to prune, but it often leaves the thread, well, "thread bare".
Regarding reporting on deleted threads, you will note in the forum guidelines that we are under no obligation to do so and that offending threads or posts may be locked or removed without notice.
As HKY noted, we do not do things on a whim, and most actions are only taken when concensus is reached. |

IlIlNine,
You make a valid point. The mods here were all regular posters before we were afflicted (trust me, NOT anointed) with the additional responsibilities of moderation. We all know what it's like to have a thread we put time and effort into disappear because of the "contributions" of some immature fool. All these things are weighed in the balance when we're deciding what to do about a thread that's been tainted by idiocy.
Please remember that none of us receive anything in return for the time we put into thistime that could just as well be spent on work, family, personal and professional development, etc. There's a finite number of us, each with a limited amount of time to devote to these boards, and a high volume of posts. Things get out of hand before we ever have a chance to react. In too many cases, by the time we become aware that there's a problem, the thread is already beyond salvation. The offending posts have been quoted and requoted so many times that it's simply not feasible for us to redact. We're faced with a lose-lose proposition: - We can leave the thread alone, letting the potty-mouthed kids, vile hatemongers, and ridiculous trolls run wild. This discourages and frustrates legitimate users and drives them away, as well as destroying the image of this sitean unacceptable proposition to Dave Sperling, who IS the owner of this site, for whom it IS a commercial proposition (i.e., his bread and butter), and who HAS appointed us to keep the forums relatively sane.
- Or, we can pull the thread, taking the offending posts out of public view but sacrificing a lot of good posts as well. This discourages and frustrates legitimate users and drives them awaybut does prevent the site from becoming a cesspool.
Like our choices? Neither do we.
Here's an idea: rather than blaming the mods and demanding that they be accountable to you, why not try holding the bad applesyour fellow usersaccountable for spoiling otherwise good threads? If you see that someone has posted crap in a thread where you've contributed, report the offending post immediately. If it's reported promptly, we are far more likely to see it and be able to take action before the thread deteriorates past the point of no return.
I'm going to unlock this thread in the interests of rational, constructive discussion. If you have other ideas on how to handle this dilemma, we're all ears. I can assure you, however, that if this degenerates into mod-bashing, hackneyed "free speech" ranting, or examples of Godwin's Law (like this worthless post, for instance) we'll lock it right back up.
That said, the floor is open...
