Ministry tackles overdue wages

Since the outbreak of the global financial turmoil in late 2008, the amount of overdue wages has been on the rise, especially since November, ministry officials said. They added that the trend is expected to accelerate this month.

It was found that 33 percent more workers had overdue wages in 2008 than in 2007. Of last year's total, 44.5 billion won in wages were left unpaid as of Dec. 31, ministry officials said. Those working in the manufacturing sector -- 34 percent of the total -- experienced overdue wages and 86.7 percent of the situation occurred at workplaces with less than 100 employees, officials said....
