I know it's one giant government company does all health insurance related job in Korea.( That's what I heard) Is it a lot?
How much more do I pay than singles since I have 2 kids?
What does it cover? Does it cover some surgeries and hospital stay?
Any info would be appreciated.

it all depends on where you work i think.... for example, i work for a national university (don't let that title fool you) and i pay around 45,000 won a month... now this covers jack-squat!! basically it'll give me a discount on meds that are already cheap... so things like surgeries or hospital stays aren't covered.... i'd recommend getting some international insurance or try to get additional health coverage (through a company, not the govn't.) that would cover anything worse than a paper cut.....

55,000 for nothing; 2.5% of your income. When I went to the doc to get Champix quit smoking med, the tiny blue made in Europe pills ran 120,000 per month for 3 months. Those weak strength Korean drugs are what are almost free as well as doctor visits being super cheap. It's just one of the many miscellaneous costs of operating in Korea as it's the law and a workable employer will automatically put you in. Even if you don't get health care insurance until sometime after you start, you'll owe from the day your visa began even though you weren't yet covered.

I don't know what other posters think on this, but I reccomend having extensive travel insurance that covers health care costs. If you get majorly sick, Korean health insurance isn't goin to be very helpful. In my case, I feel like I sort of got talked into it by the travel agent and it was quite expensive, but it covers a hell of a lot of things for a hell of a lot of money. Up to a million US for personal liability eg. burning down a house etc, for instance.

It would be interesting to hear others posters view on travel insurance.

As to the cost of Korean health insurance, it's insignificant and makes DRs visits cheap. It's also compulsory.
