Its Koreas choice but I am a little dubious about the new measure introduced to let in speakers of English from other Asian Countries. I am not doubtful of the teachers ability; I am worried about the system. It seems to be the old cost cutting and control exercise.(in my opinion) It has obviously worked for them in Industrial terms but this is Education. I have heard many good things about Philippines teachers and also know some very good Pakistani, Indian teachers as well. My problem is that when you do it en masse, the quality suffers. Why didnt they try to do this slowly and carefully? I think it's good for the bank balance, it suits there mentality of keeping worker bees in the school all hours e.g. having Yes Sir ,three bags full types about. (in my opinion)The typical Asian elements of a factory type operation- control and exploitation. Lets flog the horse to death then eat it.(in my opinion) Why does Education need efficiency or the production mentality in operation here? If they want factory English, then fine. I am not sure about the real benefits long term. Ive heard and seen various examples of Asians around here, most of them excellent but they were educated in the UK, Canada and the USA.(in my opinion) Lets see what salaries and accommodation they offer them. I also think it's an exercise to whip or weed out the fat cats in the system on the higher pay scales.(in my opinion) Most of the teachers are leaving where I am from. Why get rid of all the experience, learning relationships, knowledge and good working relationships so easily. (in my opinion)What is to be gained from rocking the boat? I foresee two main problems. The first is the general attitude of parents and children to DSAs (dark skinned Asians). Do the parents want them teaching their children? Not as I have seen when introducing my Asian friends to Hog Wans. The lack of respect for the Asian teachers in the classroom is a possibility. They might be seen as underlings by the Principals, general staff, Co teachers and children. There is racism here, a lack of courtesy and empathy for others and this experiment will prove what I have been saying about this for years.(in my opinion) Secondly, the relationship with the CFCs or Control Freak Co- teaches, that may exist in the system. One of my English Asian friends had to tell his Co teacher to get the f-ck out his classroom. I want Korea to move forward. I am Pro Korea, but the issues of respect and equality for foreigners need addressing. This is particularly true in Schools, Universities, etc .If I am not truly not equal, I am not part of the team and no amount of volleyball and Soju picnics will change that.(in my opinion) I think Hog Wans may be the last and only place where a foreigner is still relatively equal. They may be the last bastion of the Western ESL worker in the future.(in my opinion)
If this offends anybody- I apologise! I am not racist, just worried about how the new teachers will be treated.

And I'd blather on about you not using the subjunctive. |

I was merely amused at your ethnocentric views; definitely cultural imperialism at its finest. I had no intention of criticizing you for criticisms' sake. I thought you using "on mass" was ironic given your stance of non-Western education as sub-par. Cheers |

This is the hagwon mentality. They try it with most westerns and fail, now they found a way to do it. I just feel bad for the Indians and Filipinos that come here thinking they may be treated with a little respect. |

I don't know much about Filipino or Indian universities, but if they're anything like Korean universities, then I would definitely say they were in fact sub-par. |

These so called 'dark skinned asians' being brought in by bulk sounds like a good thing idea to me. I think Korea would benefit by enriching its cultural diversity. The only way to conquer your fear of heights is to stand on a high building. The only way to treat a xenophobe would be to expose them to foreigners. It might turn out that they experience no discrimination at all. So don't worry about them too much. Korean people need English for international business and this includes business with people in countries with 'dark skinned asians.' |

I agree you with you an welcome these teachers. So long as they are allowed to teach and not be taught to teach eg ""this is how we do it".I want them to be able to have input, be creative, it's hard enough to that as a black man here form SA. |

I ONLY read the title, nothing else.
TO ME, it seems like they SHOULD hire HONG KONG Chinese and SINGAPOREAN. They speak English quite well and share a similar culture.
But I think the REAL IDEA here is to exploit people and pay them as less as they possibly can, and have more authority over them. Since there are already Pakistani, Indian, Filipinas, Bangladeshi, etc. I think language instittues like the idea of paying them next to nothing and having them work in near factory-like conditions.
On the other hand, teaching English is probably more interesting and better and more exposure for both sides than them working in factories.
In that respect, I think its a great idea for young Koreans to have exposure to the realities of people from these countries. |
