I am not the greatest expert on this, so maybe others with more experience can add to this.

The major credit card companies, VISA and Mastercard, etc., have systems to flag suspicious activity. Making purchases outside your home country, either while traveling or online, may trigger this, leaving your card dead in the water. They will attempt to call you at your home number, but if you are not home, you can call them.

To call VISA on a card from the U.S. (and Canada?), call 800 890-5097. They will then verify your identity and verify the validity of recent suspicious transactions.

I asked about what to do for a card issued in Korea, and was told to call VISA International at 800 847-2911.

Another option, probably the place to start actually, is to call your bank's customer service or credit card services. Many will have an 800 number. These may not be available 24 hours, though.

I don't know the numbers for MasterCard. Maybe someone has this.

I have read about people having problems with Korean-issued cards when traveling. Maybe this will help.

I have been trying to get a KEB issued "International Credit" card to work online for purchases in the States, without success. I think part of the problem is the multiple levels to the address, but who knows? Anyone? (Calling this a "credit" card is a bit of a joke, for anyone who has gotten one.)

As someone pointed out in another post, you can call toll free 800 numbers in the U.S. and Canada using Skype for free, even if you do not buy time with them.

As long as you download their program you can call other Skype users and the 800 numbers.

Anywhere in the world.

Remember that!

(I wish I had known this sooner.)

my bank requires people to notify them prior to travelling so they can have your itinerary. wouldn't be a bad idea.
