Hi Forum,

I have a month off and will be landing in Bankok. I want to be alone the whole month living in a bungalow/small house with a fan, nothing fancy, and cheap. I don't want to sound anti-social but the purpose is to be alone and work on a writing project. Not looking to party, not looking to be by the beach, not looking for company, just a place to think and write.

I was thinking about Koh Tao but see that ten months of the year is high/peak season there with next month, March, in peak. Peak there's not much accomodation especially for those not scubadiving. Hey, I wouldn't mind snorkling ocasionally but, really, I just want somewhere as I've described in the first paragraph of this note; beach not necessary.

I thought of a templestay and there are two up in Chang Mai. If there was a templestay that had a private bungalow and the meditation activities as optional instead of scheduled and mandatory that would be ideal. Then again something entirely secular, like just a little bungalow someplace, would avoid any expectations upon the renter.

Landing at Bankok. Maybe a nearby country, like Laos or Vietnam or I don't know (only been to Thailand twice, never the neighbouring countries). Want to keep costs down and avoid crime, partyers, getting ripped off, and so on, just quiet solo time to think and write for a month.

Thanks.

try Nong Kiaow in Laos, you won't see a soul there if you don't want to.

I can vouch for Sihanoukville. It's like a poor mans Thailand, with all the white sand and swimming you could want, and a little ways off the beaten path...total isolation if you need it. Not quite as modern as Thailand (it's Cambodia) but I loved it enough to spend a few weeks there doing nothing other than reading books and studying up for grad school a few years back (which, I ironically decided not to go to).

Anyways, if I had a few months off, I'd consider Sihanoukville based on my experience there in 2005. It was exactly what I wanted; just enough isolation, but enough distraction to go swimming or see an island or two if I wanted.

Sadly, I "only" have a month break, so it's going to be a whirlwind of of Asia to meet some friends and take the girl to see Thailand and Cambodia. I sure wish I could stop in Sihanoukville tho for awhile.

Go to Koh pagnon and take a boat to a place called the Sanctuary from the beach where they have the full moon parties.

The boat will take you to a nice quiet beach with great food and people who are into meditation.

Walk past the Sanctuary as it is too expensive and down the beach you can find cheap huts.

Outside of Chiang Mai there is a really small town called Pai, nestled in the mountains. It's really relaxing--I suggest you look it up. It's basically lush greenery, some clean air with a few bungalows and a small amount of tourists who come there to kick back.
