There hasn't been a new thread about Itaewon made in the last 10 minutes so I made this one. Let's discuss all the great and wonderful things about Itaewon.

As the Lonely Planet put it. It's becoming the armpit of Seoul.

I live about a 15 min walk from Itaewon center, but rarely bother to head over that way.

I guess I over-dosed on the place back in my younger, more carefree (read: single) days. It doesn't hold much attraction for me anymore.

Maybe that's one good thing about Itaewon: I'm no longer loitering around there. Confused

Then the LP is wrong.

Itaewon has cleaned-up quite a bit in the past three years. It might be a little weird for some, walking down Fish Alley and seeing people from Ghana, but there are lots of legitimate businesses operating there now.

The sidewalks and such along Itaewon mainstreet are being expanded, and some nice new businesses have moved in.

Th LP sucks more than the skanks on the hill.

I won't buy stuff from merchants other than shoes, but the variety is good-but why isn't there the gimbap places because everybody should have kimchee jigae for 4000 won at least once a day.

Itaewon has good food. I'll give it that.

I bet it will clean up a lot when the US Soldiers leave. Even though the soldiers might not be responsible for a lot of the things that go on there, their prescence indirectly contributes to the atmosphere of the place.

Itaewon = Baltic Ave.

Yes, because Seoul is generally so tidy.

True, but other parts of Seoul have paved sidewalks, newer buildings and less junk.

3 of those MF'ers tried to start a fight with me because my lady didn't respond to their advances. I still like Itaewon and hate to generalize about army guys but good riddance.

I want to buy a scarf or shawl from those people who sit there knitting on the corner outside of the grocery store accross from the Austrian Deli, on the way to the Wolfhound.

I've come to like the Wolfhound thanks to the book exchange that meets there. In the small town that I live in, reading is about all there is to do. Free books? I'm there!

Most of the time though, I don't hang out in Itaewon. I go there to get things done and then I leave. I might try the nightlife sometime. Hell, it can't be THAT much worse than Hongdae...but I suppose that I "ain't that lonely yet."

I can understand your feelings, but you should keep in mind that without those "MF'ers" it is highly unlikely you would have a job in Korea.

True. I know a bunch of army guys and that's why I hate to generalize because they are good dudes. Just every now and then you run into some neanderthals. God, I sound like one of those people who say "I'm not racist but..." I'll shut up now.
