So I have a friend who wants to come visit but is on all kinds of pain killers prescriptive of course, for pain management. I told him that I do not know how they handle controlled prescriptive medicine coming into the country and how to replinish his prescriptions once he is there...does anyone know anything about this? I have written to the American Ebassy, no response and can't seem to find anything at all on any web site.
He is on methadone, hydrocodone for pain management.
Also, what about bringing electronics and food into the country?
If someone could just direct me where to look for the answers to these questions it would be great! |

Methadone is typically not used for pain management - it is helped to withdraw and maintain someone who has been addicted to opiate narcotics. The E2 medical test examines the incoming teachers for narcotics but they probably won't be testing a visitor. Although, your friend will probably have difficulty getting his daily drink (for the methadone). Korea is not too friendly for anything narcotic related. |

Yes, it is used for the treatment of weaning heroine addicts off of heroine; however, here in the U.S. they are now using it in the pain clinics for back pain. As I thought, most of the Asian countries probably will not take lightly to the narcotics. We have the names and numbers of a few hospitals there so we will call to find someone who speaks English.
He is not a teacher, he was just going on a 90 day visit; however, I think that just blew his hopes of getting any kind of a job there...he asked me how they treat severe injuries/pain management. I have no idea about this stuff and personally, I think the so-called pain management clinics now popping up on every corner in the U.S. just takes in tons of 90money to feed addictions...just my personal view. But it is a concern for anyone traveling who is on these meds and even has a prescription.
Don't think they are going to allow a 90 Day supply of this stuff into their country, prescription or not!
Thanks for the quick reply!!!! |

That is actually really interesting - something I did not know. I am not sure if we are doing that in Canada yet. As far as I knew, methadone was used for users weening off of oxys, morphine, heroin, etc.
Good luck to your friend! |

I think he will have a very hard time traveling anywhere for that matter out of the country. In Florida, there are these Pain Management clinics everywhere and I cannot believe the loads of narcotics they prescribe. It is amazing and legal! They prescribe the methadone tablets and hydrocodone. I mean, I am not expert but jeez, how much pain can you kill without numbing your brain?
Well, so much for that right?
Thanks for the reply! |

you might want to try Severance Hospital's Intl Clinic - Dr. Linton, the Director. He's technically K as he was born here, but trained in the U.S. and I imagine one or both parents are Americans. He'd probably know more.
on a side note - isn't methadone addictive also?
and is your friend interested in alternative therapies here? I have an incredible acupuncurist I go to for all kinds of pains - mostly arthritis nowadays - if you want more info later just pm me.
good luck.
oh - Seoul Global Help Center can probably help also - don't know the number - but if you dial 02-1330 they can tell you the number.
