At this point I am getting ready to decide to seek job opportunities elsewhere. There's not much work these days in the States for teachers. Many of the public school districts around my area are letting people go, increasing class sizes, renegotiating contracts or eliminating them all together. Methinks it is not a bad idea to get out for a year or two or three and teach abroad again. I taught in China last school year, and it was ok. I have few complaints (I might go there again), but at this time I am thinking about Korea or Thailand. I am leaning toward Thailand. I have been in contact with Mediakids and I like that they offer
; a 4 month contract and a place to stay. THis is a good thing because it will allow me to 1) See how I like living in Thailand and 2) Seek a better teaching gig. Korea seems like a decent option despite what a lot of folks say about it here. I have lived abroad three times in my life, 6 month, 2 years and the last time for a year. Every country is different, but it is always an adventure. I just think you have to keep your eyes and mind open. Have any of you lived in both Korea and Thailand? What do y'all think? |

Yep Im leaving the States to teach in Korea to pay off some loans. There are jobs in the States esp with Obama wanting to have 2 to 3 million new teachers in upcoming years. Also Teach for America is a good short term teaching opportunity but my GPA wasn't too good so I dont think they hire me.
Korea is good if you want to save money with all the accomodations, though the won is down.
Thailand is warmer, but pay and cost of living is much less. When I went down there people are generally friendlier and its more vacationlike atmosphere.
I would rather be in SE Asia, but need to save, so Im going to Korea for at least a year. |

I've lived in Korea for almost 5 years and had lived in Thailand for roughly 6 1/2 (a majority of it teaching).
If finances are an issue, head for Korea.
If finances are not an issue, head for Thailand.
In either place, your way can be made, but you don't wanna' get "stuck" broke and homeless in Thailand People tend to find high buildings when that happens to them there

| I would choose quality of life over money, as long as you are putting away at least something every month and not going backwards financially. |

If HEAT AND SWEATING are not an issue, head for Thailand.
If heat and sweating are an issue, head to Korea. You'll only have to deal with it a couple of months a year unless you break out for a vacation.
A lot of people do long term vacation stints in Thailand and decide from these that it would be heaven to work there. I haven't heard that from anyone who has actually worked there, though! It's great when you're sleeping in, on the beach, diving, and having a great time without anything to worry about; it's a new ballgame when you have to work in that heat and humidity.
Choose wisely. Hey, at least you have a 4 month option there! |

For now jobs in LOS are actually paying quite well with the exchange rate.
If it holds up.
If you can put the ground work in you can easily get a starting salary of 40k Baht, throw in a few privates (illegal of course) and you can put another 50% up on that.
When I left Thailand I was making a little bit less than I made here, but I was working a lot more hours.
Now if I had stayed there I would be making more than I make here.
Tis up to you though.
Korea was a nice break for me. It is what you make of it for both countries. |

Same here; other countries are never like home and are full of foreigners. |
