I have never owned a dog, but I know a few people who do. I have decided not to eat dog soup. While I am still a carnivourous hypocrite, I am at least aware of my hypocrisy as a matter of choice, and not as the basis of a political manifesto. Perhaps my personal aversion has to do with the fear of eating too many species (gee, shall i try dolphin next?), or eating the species that I would regard as "allies'. I know it's not logical; but let's face it, most of us are living in KOREA Laughing Besides, the abstainers should never be held accountable for their opinions, because we all know that the door swings both ways.

In addition, if a Korean asks me "Why don't you eat dog?", I'd reply "Well, if Koreans judge people by their appearance, then Westerners judge animals by their appearance. By the way, does your poodle have strawberry-coloured ears, or are they blueberry?"

I've never owned a dog, and I still don't want to eat the stuff. The very thought feels as repugnant to me as child pornography. This position may not hold up to intensive logical scrutiny since I eat other kinds of meat, but the thought of dog meat makes me want to throw up so I don't eat it.

I'm inclined to agree with Sakamuras, but way too many Korean men seem to want to push the issue with me. "You don't eat dog meat? Why not? It's an important part of Korean culture, you know. It will improve your stamina! Why did Brigitte Bardot blahblahblahblah..." I never bring the subject up.

I don't give a rat's ass what other people eat, but on the dog days I'll be eating samgyetang, thank you very much.

The dog eating issue will never go away. I think that most people find it in "bad taste" to eat dog. No pun intended. Usually, educated folk don't eat dog. In korea, dog is eaten for all the wrong reasons. It's usually eaten by men for sexual reasons. They claim it makes them "stronger!" Yeah right! No scientific evidence exists to prove that! You can bet one thing; if eating dog would make men stronger, all men all over the world would be eating dog!!!!! Geesh!!! korean men just don't get it sometimes.

not really. you've been misinformed. not for sexual reasons, but more for a source of protein...same reason why they eat lamb (hu-gyum-so). similar to why americans still eat possum, cute bunnies...and other rodents in the midwest. sure, they can get the same protein from beef, but it's become part of their cuisine...and perhaps it's actually considered a delicacy.

most koreans who eat dogs these days are from the "old school" or from the countryside...i don't know anyone under the age of 35 who eats or has eaten dog.

OP re-read...

Get over it.

What's the point of conducting a poll regarding this issue? What do you attempt to accomplish other than alienating people who have eaten dog?

I've heard more than one Korean Korean make reference to dog flesh as an aphrodesiac. Whether it actually is or not, the belief is rooted.

I've also heard more than one person state that dog meat is the best source of protein for human beings as it is somehow better absorbed by us than the flesh of other animals.

Heukyeomso is literally "black goat", not lamb. It's not eaten as a source of protein, but for medicinal reasons.

The opossum is not a rodent, but for your purpose, it's effective to compare our revulsion at dog eating (which I personally don't share) with the fact that "vermin" is eaten in some regions of the United States.

That's probably true of Koreans in the United States. I myself have on numerous occasions seen Koreans in their 20s and 30s eat dog. In Seoul.

SAKAMRUS:

Im reading an article on the Seoul Times site today written by this:

Definitely needs more than just stamina.
Bum-Jun Suh([email protected]), who studied at Sungkyunkwan University, serves as staff reporter of The Seoul Times.

In the article he writes things such as, Korean people have long believed that dog meat is a classic example of stamina food and the best aphrodisiac.. Several Chinese traditional medicinal books teach that dog meat is the best stamina food to fend off summer heat and to regain vitality.

I think I can pretty much speak for the American Research, Scientific and Medical community, of which I was a part ... we didn't do a darn lot of eating dog research. Maybe other places, but ...

Nonetheless, I've not had it since I've been here in Korea. Anyone want to get together and go get some for a dinner out ? I don't even know where to go ...

I don't see what the big deal is. People from almost every culture eat something that seems strange and / or disgusting to people outside that culture. Koreans eat dog, My grandfather eats seal flipper pie. . blah blah blah

btw, I'm both a dog owner and a longterm vegetarian.

Peppermint,

Thats hitting the nail right on the head!

Well done. Could not have said it better myself.

My uncle's wife is from chile and she eats baby cow brains....and cow tongue.

To each his or her own.... Laughing

I owned a dog before (while an undergrad) and he died of old age. I have eaten dog soup a couple of times to try it out.
