Hello everyone,
I'm thinking of doing the "Who am I" game where you tape a name to the foreheads of the participants, and they have to go around the room and ask the other people questions to find out what name is written on their head.
With my more advanced students, I'll try to get them to do this only in English (for the lower levels, I'll probably allow for them to speak Korean, because my main purpose of this game is to keep them busy . . . speaking English is a bonus).
What I need to know are names of people (if they have a Korean spelling of their name, or an English spelling if they're Korean names -- I'll try to use both if possible) that Korean children would know.
The age range of my low-level students are grades 2 to 4, and my advanced students are middle- to high-school aged.
This game is best if you have no clue of what the name options are before you start to play, so I don't want to ask my kids for the names of people they know.
I figure that they'd know Disney movie characters.
Any other suggestions? |

With the winter camp going on at my school, I've got 3 times a week where I need to occupy the children's time before lunch with 30 minutes of game activities . . . I need something that these boys will be excited about so that they stop threatening to leave class early.
They actually liked the "telephone" game we played today, and were fighting over who could come up with the next phrase to be whispered from ear to ear.
I think they all know about Jack Sparrow . . . but I really have no clue about him . . . I think I've seen 2 of the "Pirates" movies. |

I was surprised to discover that the boys in the 4th and 5th grade are fans of American wrestlers. Try Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin. |

maybe try Yi Sun Shin, Park Se Ri, Park Ji Sung, Kim Yun-A.
They will NOT know Mother Teresa or Ghandi or even a lot of the Disney characters they may not recognize as they often have their own names for them (e.g. In-o gongju instead of the Little Mermaid/Ariel, Baeksal gongju instead of snow white, etc.)
another problem is even though they may know the phonetic sounds of the person/character (like Hermione from HP to them is heh-ruh-mee-oh-neh) they will NOT necessarily recognize the English spelling and will need to hear it out loud before they know who it is. this of course wrecks the point of the game.
in my experience, your average hagwon-going Korean students from about 9-14 often don't even know how to spell their own hometown or capital city's name in English even though they see the words on English road signs every day. (this is excepting advanced students who can read English novels of course.) |
