Just curious, how long would it take Korea, Japan, and China to be at war if the U.S. abruptly left? |

If the north collapsed, I don't think it would take very long to go to war with Korea. But I don't see a scenario why they would go to war with Japan, unless they just want to take it over. Plus Japan had virtually no military except its "National Guard". |

Well, Korea is still technically at war with itself, but I'm sure someone will colonize Korea within a year. |

Although Japan has a Constitutional provision barring any military action other that for self-defense, they have one of the largest military budgets in the world (#5, according to Wikipedia), and very advanced weaponry (although relatively few active service members).

Japan's military, if mobilized, would most definitely not be a push-over. That's why China, Korea, etc. still closely watch Japan's military policy. They know their history.
(edit: Jeebus, look at the US's military expenditures compared to the rest of the world. No wonder we're going broke.)

The north already has collapsed, pretty much, hasn't it? |

Old joke in the U.S. military is that the U.S. is not in Korea to defend it from an attack from the North, but rather to prevent S. Korea from attacking Japan.
Jokes usually have a spigot of truth to them. |

Well, after scrolling down on that link I see that NK wins in the percentage of its GDP spent on the military at 22%. Way to go, guys. The US is still only under about 5% of its GDP, so we've got a lot of catching up to do.
Anybody wanna buy a North Korean soldiers? He's short, so he won't take up much room, but he might require western-style toilet training.

Haven't studied Japan since the 7th grade!
So it can have a military, just not attack anyone legally haha.
So if it was just South Korea and Japan, who would win do you think? |

Depends. If war suddenly broke out, I'd say Korea could mobilize its force more quickly, but if Japan was given some preparation time I'd say they'd hand Korea its own ass.
That's just my hunch based on my limited research, but as I'm a gambling man that's where I'd lay my money. |

^ Japan's military is mobilized and would absolutely hand Korea its ass. Japan's navy is more advanced and nearly double the size of Korea's; neither country could really effectively 'invade' the other on land, but Japan would own the seas.
In fact, Japan's navy would trounce the rest of Asia's combined. |

I don't know how they'd do in a war against anyone, but 9 out of 10 of my students are the kind you want to pick up and hug, they're so cute. |

South Korea would get its ass kicked in any naval battle, and they would need to fight one in order to invade Japan.
Japan may have a pacifist constitution but they are no pushovers. |

All these countries exist to sell Americans electronic products and they know it. They aren't going to war. What's the upside? |

That all depends upon China. Given its past, Japan might hestitate with another invasion.
China has control over the North and if they tell the Northern leader no, he will probably listen but I can't think of any reason why China would say no at the moment. |
