According to the new E2 rules teachers can still get visas in Japan if they have had an E2 before. However, the embassy in Japan can be as particular as they want about who gets a visa and who doesn't. The consulate in Montreal warned me that some teachers have gone to Japan and been refused a visa, usually due to having some problem on their record such as a one-day overstay, etc.
My trouble is that I recall my first year in Korea (2002) I didn't know about getting an ARC and my school never told me. When I left Korea they asked me for it at the check in counter at Incheon airport. I ended up having to go to the immigration office in the airport, paying ~30,000W for the AR # (I guess) and going on my way.
Is that going to be a problem with regard to getting my visa in Japan? The consulate in Montreal said they didn't know, it is up to the embassy in Japan. I've emailed my boss and I will call the embassy in Japan. But it's night there now so I'm trying to get some info in the meantime.

OK so I'll kind of answer my own question. I called the consulate in Fukuoka and explained what happened with the ARC way back when. They said "it MAY be a problem, it's 50/50".
Once again, it's so wonderful dealing with this model of organization called Korean immigration. I always appreciate their straightforward and definitive answers on everything.
I think I'm getting an ulcer. |
