I will be here in the US through February 5th, then fly to Hong Kong to take a 4-week TEFL International course in Zhuhai, China. I expect to arrive in Korea (Busan) about March 9th.
Would it help me to apply for jobs in advance, or would I be better off waiting until I arrive in Korea, when I can see recruiters and employers in person? If in advance, how far in advance?

I start my public school position March 2nd I think (it's the first day of the new session).
So you might be a week late so I'd probably try to find a position ASAP and let them know about you late arrival. |

yout timing is bad for starting in Busan as you plan.
The bulk of those coming in for the new semester are arriving the end of February and starting March 2nd. Orientation is the last week of February.
You should first get the public school job confirmed, get the required nterview , and then send your papers for the visa.
You cannot just arrive in Busan and get the job in a public school.
PMOE do not hire themselves, they use a few agents, or go mostly through the EPIK system. |

of course, there will still be positions open...but these are schools either deep in the country or with a bad rep.
The other option is Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education. They seem to start their school year a bit later and do their hiring later. |

Good idea on the on-site TEFL course. You're doing yourself a huge favor in terms of maximizing your potential, effectiveness, and enjoyment of teaching English. You'll not have wasted your money. |

Good idea on the on-site TEFL course. You're doing yourself a huge favor in terms of maximizing your potential, effectiveness, and enjoyment of teaching English. You'll not have wasted your money. |
Thank you for your comment! I also wanted some certification, to maximize my chance of getting a decent job in Korea. I have enough money to go a few months, if necessary, without a job. I didn't want to apply on the basis of "when I plan it I will have TEFL certification," instead of actually having it, but now that it's planned (and the silly China visa is, I hope, on the way), I want to consider applying. |

Ok, yea, on-site, great. However, I hate to burst your bubble when I say that TEFL certification is not valued highly in Korea. There's little credential delineation between on-site and online certifications here.
Some say this means you ought not do an on-site -- as it's more costly and likely teaches you more than what's required -- and instead do an online. It's your choice, really. |
