I wonder if the childish soju buffoons up north realise that in the real world, you don't just get away with such inflammatory statements.
N. Korea threatens US; world anticipates missile
By HYUNG-JIN KIM 1 hour ago
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) North Korea threatened Wednesday to wipe the United States off the map as Washington and its allies watched for signs the regime will launch a series of missiles in the coming days.
Off China's coast, a U.S. destroyer was tailing a North Korean ship suspected of transporting illicit weapons to Myanmar in what could be the first test of U.N. sanctions passed to punish the nation for an underground nuclear test last month.
The Kang Nam left the North Korean port of Nampo a week ago with the USS John S. McCain close behind. The ship, accused of transporting banned goods in the past, is believed bound for Myanmar, according to South Korean and U.S. officials.
"If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will ... wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all," the official Korean Central News Agency said.

Laughable. The US would neutralise Pyongyang in a millisecond, if it chose to. |

It seems to me that in the real world, North Korea does get away with such inflammatory statements. What's worse is that they've been getting away with actively and openly constructing weapons of mass destruction. |

The US won't interfere with the North's weapons program due to the sphere of influence coming from China. The Chinese hate the idea of a US presence in Afghanistan also, for that matter. |

The DPRK government doesn't write this stuff for foreigners. They write it as bombastic propaganda for their own people, in Korean.
Then, it gets (incidentally) translated into English and other languages and posted on their government website, where it gets picked up by AP and other press agencies, who report it verbatim. Because it makes great copy.
Taking these press releases seriously as DPRK government policy is like reading Weekly World News or National Enquirer and assuming its the equivalent of a press release by the Max Planck Institute of Advanced Physics.
Notice that the DPRK doesn't say this stuff through diplomatic channels. They don't send cables to the White House threatening to "wipe the US off the map". That wouldn't be constructive. And nobody outside of the brainwashed population of North Korea would take such a statement seriously for the obvious reason that they simply don't have the means to carry it out. |

Totally agree for the most part, although unfortunately there are plenty of people outside NK (assuming no-one posts on here from North Korea ) who do take rhetoric like this a lot more seriously than they ought to.
I really don't see why some people get so excited by stuff like this from the north. All they're saying effectively is "if you attack us, we'll hit you hard back", just like they've said many times before. (For the uninitiated, what they mean is "please don't attack us".) I've never seen any direct quote of this kind of rhetoric that didn't have the 'if you..' part in it, although, oddly enough, that's usually missing from the headlines when it appears in our media. It wouldn't be very headline worthy otherwise.
If your boss said something like "if you mess up this job, I'll have your balls on toast" would there really be anyone stupid enough to go around saying "but, but, but..... he couldn't get away with that, he'd be arrested and jailed....and anyway my balls would fall off the toast before he put it in his mouth....."? |

Meanwhile back at sea, the KangNam is changing course, heading back the way it came.
Actions do indeed speak louder than words, especially for tin pot dictators like Kim Jong-il. |

And 2 more test missiles were fired off the East coast near the city of Wonsan. And here we go again.
It's obviously a ploy to intimidate, but the motives are still unclear though they could go out with a bang if their regime falls on the eve of destruction in any shape or form. What do they think they'd gain from a destroyed South Korea? Well, again, no known motive other than South Korea used to give them money and supplies to diffuse their threats and now that's not working so they're having a hissy fit. They act like the world owes them. I wonder what will happen when someone calls their bluff on these threats and claims? That's bound to happen after so many repeated threats with only small test missiles fired into the Sea of Japan instead of America, Japan, and South Korea burning in a sea of fire.
Since they successfully invaded and beat the South once until America showed intervened, they believe they can do it again, but that's irrational when you look at it. Of course, South Korea must have had a lower level of technology and military power than the North had back in 1950, but not so today and they know it. They need their butt kicked and invaded; not Iraq. I believe DPRK is looking to start a world war by getting America involved to the point China opposes and then, indirectly, the DPRK becomes the big boy by having China side in with them. North Korea is probably waiting for China to get angry when it becomes clear America is unable to pay back all that money lent. And that's one issue they're waiting to happen as China is not ready to give up on the US though they're getting concerned. This is why diplomacy is practiced rather than just putting an end to the hot winded small wimpy Nork regime. For years, I knew taking debt out with China is the biggest threat to our national security; not Bin Laden. |

NKorea fires missiles; launch toward US feared
By JAE-SOON CHANG 1 hour ago
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) North Korea fired a barrage of short-range missiles off its east coast Thursday, a possible prelude to the launch of a long-range missile toward Hawaii over the July Fourth holiday.
Firing a ballistic missile on Independence Day would be a challenge to Washington, which has been rallying international support for enforcement of U.N. sanctions imposed against Pyongyang following a May 25 nuclear test. North Korea is banned from testing ballistic missiles under U.N. resolutions.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura said Thursday that a long-range missile launch this weekend was possible. "We cannot rule out the possibility," he said, citing Pyongyang's past behavior.
In 2006, North Korea launched its most advanced Taepodong 2 missile while the U.S. celebrated Independence Day, though the rocket fizzled shortly after takeoff and fell into the ocean.
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the United States remains concerned about North Korea's missile and nuclear programs but called Thursday's launches "not unexpected."
Several U.S. Defense Department officials said there is nothing to indicate that North Korea is ready to launch a long-range ballistic missile and there appears to be no immediate threat to the United States.
The April 5 launch of a Taepodong-2 required 12 days of preparation on the launch pad, which was fully observable to U.S. satellites. Short and medium-range missiles, however, can be launched with little notice.
Missile defenses around Hawaii were beefed up following a mid-June report in a Japanese newspaper that the North might fire a long-range missile toward the islands in early July.
The head of the U.S. Northern Command, Gen. Victor E. "Gene" Renuart, said in an interview with the Washington Times this week that U.S. missile defenses are prepared to knock down any incoming North Korean missile. "I think we ought to assume there might be one on the Fourth of July," he said, according to the paper. |

I wouldn't worry too much about the debt. Plenty of American companies and properties they can buy with it. Especially now that there's a sale on. |

They fired off a few rockets in honor US Independence Day. Sort of like a tribute. Kinda cute if you ask me. |
