Biblical Literalism Kills

Quote:
Leilani and Dale Neuman stood by as their diabetic daughter slipped into sickness, then acute illness and finally death from diabetic ketoacidosis. As followers of an online faith community called Unleavened Bread Ministries, which rejects medicine, prayed for her recovery but they did not take her to a doctor or call for an ambulance as their little girl died of an entirely treatable condition. Tell me these people should not be punished.

Now all you have to do is show where in the Bible it says that people must not use medicine.

Wasn't it God who created medicine in the first place? Ummm...yeah.

Why use pathetic examples like this to try to reduce who God is?

You didnt read the article.

Literalism destroys a proper understanding of the Bible.

This is also addressed.

the article wrote:
It is about people hiding behind a claim of reading the Bible literally, which nobody does anyway. A great example can be found among those who claim to follow every word of the Bible and use that claim to explain their rejection of homosexuality and witchcraft, but have no problem violating equally biblical bans on pork or cooking on the Sabbath.

Some kids really don't deserve the parents they get.

It's not about a belief in god (to the point of utter moronacy), it's about how pathetic the Neumans are for letting their daughter suffer & die from a perfectly treatable illness when she DID NOT have to.
Parents are supposed to care for their children, not deny basic medical care when clearly a child is very, very ill and his/her life is at stake.

Child abuse w/depraved indifference resulting in death or negligent homicide, I haven't decided which. You can be sure I'd send them to the slammer for quite a few years to go think about it though.

Praise to god alright.

Literalist bible idiots are all a bunch of dysfunctional freaks. They belong back in the dark ages.

I am uber-angry at this shizz. I am drunk and a little more liberal than normal, but come on, how can MOFOS like this exist? Am I the only one that sees a little bit of insanity here? How can these people be left to function in society? They are only dangerous radicals in the system. I am sickened.

Words drawn out by the soju. Long live ladidah.

Actually, I would say that they belong in the Reformation period. The Dark Ages was replete with Neo-Platonist thinkers who exemplified the concepts of the Bible (which was being assembled and canonized at the time) as allegorical. It wasn't until western Christians who decided that the Bible was the be all end all explanation for everything that literalism really took hold.

The Christian Science garbage didn't really take hold until the late 19th century. Not only are these people lunatics, but their beliefs are heretical!

more from the article:

Quote:

Of course, they will point to a new scripture which extends the prohibition on the first two, and frees them from the second set of proscriptions. But that is an interpretive move and that means that they are no longer literalists who are freed from the consequences of their actions simply by invoking the Free Exercise clause.

The case of Kara Neumann and the parents who allowed her to die, is about the dangers of any group of people, of any faith, refusing to admit that they too are part of an interpretive tradition, making decisions about the meaning of the text which they revere. When they fail to acknowledge their role in interpreting the text, they are creating an excuse to check their consciences at the door, and end up deeply hypocritical at best and murderous at worst.

One word: Fundamentalist
