I'm pondering a new TV purchase, and I thought I'd decided on the Samsung Cannes PDP 50-inch full HD model (750) that is around 2.5 million won. But the price of a 52" Sony Bravia LCD has come down to around 2.8 million won on the Web.

I hear LCD screens are more fragile than PDP and well, there is also the pic quality. I hear plasmas are best for movies and sports, but it seems LCD will live longer than plasma.

Anyone have their thoughts?

Wow... with the exchange rate the Sony is that cheap? Prices should go the other way!

Either one will be very nice!

Both will live long enough... don't worry. Old Plasma's had such issues.

I have a plasma and an LCD. It depends on what you like to use them for. These days, the LCD's have gotten better and better. LCD's have a sharper look, and do much better with HDTV video on-air. That's my opinion. Plasmas tend to do better with movies, IMHO.

LCD's look better in the showroom than PDP's do, because they blast the brightness levels.

I'm jealous.. sounds like 2 great TV's!

This is the entry model for the 52" Bravia. The top of the line one costs like 3.5 million won.

Man... I don't know. That model is a year old. A lot of changes have happened in the past year.

Knowing that, I'd probably go for the Samsung.

hmm...for what it is worth...i have a samsung LCD tv....and have been more than impressed with the quality...it is not the same model as the one you mentioned..but just to let you know that samsung is doing a good job with the tvs.
I debated wether to get PDP or LCD...but now as more and more stations get HD...I am glad I went with the LCD...it just keeps getting better.
Watching movies on it is great and watching animation movies on it is wicked cool. Cool

I'm also considering the new LED TVs by Samsung. Anyone know anything about them?

hmm..not sure about the new led's...
but I have the 52" full hd 1080p LCD.
i admit they are a bit pricey, but if you are willing to spend the extra money...they are worth it...at least I have not regretted it.
I got the home theater surround sound with it as well
...lov'n every minute of it. Cool

Is 52 inches really worth it? Honestly, I have a huge apartment, my closet is the size of a lot of teachers apartments (it's actually a bedroom that we turned into a closet). I have a 32 inch LCD in my bedroom and a 21 inch for my computer, and I'm satisfied with both. Back home, for a real living room/theater room, I'd consider a 52, but with rooms being so small here, it's not needed.

I suggest, save your money. Buy a size that's more convenient. TV's look much smaller in the show room because show rooms are large. I bought my TV because I got a good deal, but it works.

I have a 36" CRT HD JVC model that I bought nearly four years ago. The picture is great, it's just that I'm wondering how much better a 50" would be.

My living room is definitely big enough to handle up to 50-52". My other friend suggested getting a projector, and that is something I have not ruled out.

Honestly.... I'd get a projector next time around (since you already have one TV). If you plan on watching lots of movies, that is. Make sure and get a model that won't kill you when you need to change bulbs!

Once you make the leap to big screen, there's no going back PERIOD. I now even think my 36" is too small, and well, my a/v buddy who is knowledgable about this field says home theater begins with 50". I have to agree though a 47" would suffice.

if you enjoy watching movies...and are into home theater
if you have the money...it's worth it.
while room size my be an issue for some...I imagine there are those people who have been in Korea long enough to have acquired some nice living space and would benefit from a larger screen size.
Even if I were to move to a smaller home....I would still go for the larger screens...they really do have that theater effect appeal.

Honestly, I think a 47" is a pretty good size for the average room in Korea.
