|
|
I'm hoping to get a Korean friend to sign me up for an iPhone in her name. I'd like to keep my current phone number I have with SKT, but I know KT won't be able to do it since the new phone won't be in my name. I assume I could cancel my SKT account right before buying my new phone, thus 'freeing up' my current number. Then, KT can register the new phone with that number.
Has anyone tried this? If it works, how soon before buying the new phone would I have to cancel the old one? If I go to an SK center and cancel, could I go to a KT shop immediately after and register the new phone in my name or should I wait a day or two? |

I'm pretty sure that won't work. When you cancel a phone number, it doesn't become available again for a long time, i'm thinking like a month or more. I can't remember what the reasoning was, but I think its to keep people from hijacking your phone number right after you give it up, and also give other people time to know that number is no longer available, (reducing the chance that you'll have a bunch of people calling you asking for the previous owner of the number).
I once had a phone number i really liked from ktf, but switched to SKT before the whole "you can keep your number" rule existed. When that rule came about, I tried to get my old KTF number back, but it was impossible even tho it wasn't in use.
if you cancel with one carrier, that number stays with them until someone who signs up with that carrier takes it. When signing up for a new number, the telephone companies already have certain numbers allocated. SKT has a bunch that they have reserved, and KTF has their own.
Your only real choice will be to just get used to having a new number. |

KT offered to do this for me as part of the sweetener to put the phone in my wifes name when they refused to put it in mine. But this was KT to KT.
Maybe you will have to port your number to a KT phone in your name first and then disconect it to allow your friend to pick up the number.
If you have a 3g phone then SK must unlock it but you will need to pay a fee. So I would recommend.
1) Go to SK get the phone unlocked;
2) Go to KT and sign up for a USIM plan for your existing phone;
3) Apply for iPhone;
Not sure if it will work. Do you really need an iPhone as KT/SHOW are not worthy of your business. |
