Hi

I recently entered Korea on a travellers visa with my contract already approved by my new hagwon. I couldn't get my visa yet as I was waiting for the KCUE to approve my degree verification but my hagwon were so desperate for me to start they gave me keys to my apartment and cash in hand for my flight reimbursement. I have worked two weeks at my new job which I absolutely love, great kids, good hours, no prep. My visa number has now come through and im supposed to go on a visa run next week however my director is trying to get me on the travellers insurance and is refusing to give me the NHIC package. When I refused to work illegally after getting some advise on here and realising that a) i may not be covered and b) i may get deported on travellers insurance as I'm not a traveller they still flat out refused. I got my recruiter to come in and act as an interpreter and still they refuse to give me legal cover. I'm now very worried that the directors reluctance to pay my NHIC payment is part of a larger scam. My recruiter just informed me that if I dont sign up to my new visa and work a months notice of my resignation (of a contract that hasnt legally started) they will withhold my documents. My CRB Check expires in two weeks and my holiday visa in one week. Any advise much needed!!!! Very Happy

They need you more than you need them.

First pack up everything you brought with you and move it into a love motel. Then tomorrow go to them and tell them that you want your docs back immediately and if they do that you will work for them for the next month (but take off sooner if you can since you probably won't be getting paid anyway). If they refuse, call your embassy and report your passport stolen (do this in front of them). If you do not get it back by then go get a new one.

Do not work for these people. The recruiter is crap as well. When you are out of dodge let us know who it is.

You can bet your bottom dollar that once the OP calls the embassy and says his passport is being held hostage, the OP will get it back by the end of that day or sooner.

Leave NOW!!!! You should consider yourself very lucky that this shit is happening at the beginning and not in the middle to end of your contract.

Get your docs as the people said and get the heck out of dodge. Go home find another job, EPIK is hiring for March and since you have your docs. it should be an easy process. Get a good school and come back and enjoy Korea for what it truely is! A Sparking Paradise!

Suerte,
Jesse

Yes, but under the logic of the Korean "justice" system, the OP will likely be charged as well for leaving a passport where it could be stolen. If you're walking in a crosswalk when the walk sign is on and you get run over, you will get charged for damages to the driver's car.

Doesn't matter. In this case it's worth it. Even if the OP just goes there and start DIALING 119, I guarantee they'll give his shit back.

Anyway, OP, your gut instinct is dead on. They are ripping you off, and trying to hold your docs is the oldest in the book. Raise any ruckus you can to get them back. Nothing they can do.

Good luck on your situation.

Again...it's been said many, many times, do NOT give your documents to anyone. Photocopy them if you must but do NOT give your originals. You have no power once you give them up. Just look at the OP.

Do you want to work for thieving scoundrels? I'm guessing the answer is, "No".

As others have suggested, immediately contact your embassy and explain that your school is refusing to return your passport. The embassy will threaten to get the police involved so the school will undoubtedly cough it up.

Hopefully you can get your diploma returned as well. If KCUE has validated your diploma then it shouldn't be difficult to line up a better job here.

Illegal teachers usually end up getting screwed royally.

You are technically not on a visa so find a school ASAP, get a contract with them, and work there.

Don't tell your hogwan or they will only cause you trouble.

Mate it sounds like they have given you an apartment, given you your money for the flight right? The school is trying to get you insurance (you can't get NHIC insurance until you have a visa).

They sound like they are bending over backwards for you.

First thing to say sorry for causing problems (you don't have to mean it, its just the way things work). It will make you're life much easier

The second is to ask your boss if you are going to get NHIC after the visa. If not (are you kiwi?) take the others advice (if you're kiwi get private health, that way you don't have to pay pension)

Third is to go to Japan and get your visa you have no rights until then.

You have taken money from these people, you have entered a verbal contract, this should matter to you.
