Staff bonding= soju
Cultural experience = mountain climbing + soju + singing
These are not really obligations but they can make lie easier if you are new. |

Is it in the contract? Then not legally required. But it will help your relationship with the school. |

I don't know where you get your info from, but this simply isn't correct. The only over night stuff is teachers' trips. They suck but you can always get blasted on soju. And they raise your respect around the office ten fold. |

No, there are overnight camps. You get paid extra for them, but they are required. |

Not in my stock standard EPIK contract they aren't. |

The only overnight stuff I was asked to go on was a staff trip. The planned it right in the middle of my vacation days so of course I didn't go. They were a bit put out about that.
Then when a hagwon chain took over the running of the public school camps. The teachers were told to do overnight camps. A few did but most of us declined. |

Sorry, but the work day ends at 4:30 or 5 and it doesnt include saturday or Sunday. I;'ve never heard of a clause that requires overnight trips. I don't even do the silly year end teachers piss-up. Cramming 20 sweaty drunk koreans into a room for 5 isn't my idea of any kind of fun or bonding. No thanks. |

OK. In my province they have a clause about NSETs maybe required to work outside regular hours. This is in my contract for my province. Not all provinces are the same.
My mistake. I should have said that in my OP, but I also know of a few others who have to do this in other provinces other than mine. |

My school has once a year trips for the teachers but considering a) you pay for it, and b)no one from my office is going, I generally decline without worrying about consequences. |

No. In my province, I've done several weeks of overnight camps for the province and cities for middle school students over the past 3 years. I love doing them because they pay extra and I get to make my own lessons. Usually they are very exhausting, but also rewarding.
I've also been invited on teacher excursions, but I've never gone, as they're optional. |

Is there no limit to the OT in your contract? In last year's GEPIK contract they had that clause, but it was limited to six hours of overtime...unless you agreed to more.
And doesn't your contract include ANOTHER clause which states that you will not work on Saturday or Sunday or holidays?
As far as winter camps go out of the seven camps I have done/doing I have never had to do overnights. They all have fallen within my regular work hours. These were for Gyeonggi-Do and Chungnam provinces. |

To answer all of your questions. Some schools have them and some don't. It all depends on your particular school/contract. |
