so would anyone here pay 16,000 won for the large size (maybe 1kg) of oatmeal?
well I wouldn't. and when I complained to the proprietor he started shouting and whining about the exchange rate
cry me a river!! the rate wasn't that much different in 2003 when I first came and no one was hking up prices then !!
you know it's not like it's a freakin' snack food or something frivolous - for f*ck's sake - some of us don't/can't manage freakin' rice for breakfast!!! it IS a staple and it's not that big of a deal - how about just importing it already - considering how many places one can buy it these days - put it on the regular market already!
KOREA GREEDY !!

| It isn't just those "western" products that we crave that have gotten hit. The adjumma that serves snacks downstairs from my hagwon has raised their prices for snack items. This shop serves Korean elementary students. For example, deep fried cheese sticks jumped 100 won a couple of weeks ago. The foreigners rarely buy anything from her ....... |

I think you mean price gouging, not price gauging.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_gouging
I'm gonna assume that was a typo and that you actually do know how to spell the term. |

E-Mart is one of the worst stores for this practice. |

I hate having to pay so much for a little reminder of home.
Blame the government and their excessively high (compared to other countries) import tariffs. |

I beg to disagree - a staple is a staple is a staple. It's a grain and yes, I know grains aren't readily available here but that doesn't change the fact it's a staple item.
grains have many nutrients in them that are critical to healthy growth, development and continued health
- ever price K vitamins? if kids could eat properly they wouldn't need to spend so much on artifical support - and many nutritionists believe there are still undiscovered aspects of eating healthy food as opposed to just taking supplements that makes it better for us.
and look at the boxed cereals here - loaded with sugar - the good ones are hard to find and muselix, as someone pointed out in another thread - is really expensive also - and surprise surprise, it's also pretty healthy (depends on the brand and mix, some are too sugary) |

In my city of 200,000 with two big chain department stores, both have all but eliminated their "Western Food" isle. Odd that I can't get a jar of peanut butter any more, at any price.
I could get Jiffy peanut butter in the Somalian countryside when I was in the Peace Corpse. Odd that I can't get any in the 12th biggest economy in the world, an hour from Seoul. |

Oat meal...............
I'm no expert on Korean agriculture but here goes...... However Im sure they don't farm much of it.
The world price at the minute for 'staple' crops is going up for so many reasons.
Many anal retards on this forum could like this:
Staple crops: Discuss.....................
For non anal restarts...........................................................................................................................................................................................................
A. The shift from 'staple' crops to bio fuel crops, in areas that you would call 'third world countries'. PS they are not. Lets hope they learn from the 'developed' world's mistakes as they 'develop'.
B. Unseasonal climatic changes (ie lower than average crop yields).
C. Government incentives not to produce such crops, as in (A) which are now worth sooooooo much less than a year ago due to the drop in oil prices, which would affect oatmeal prices for non American protected areas.
I conclude that some frivolous foreigners are not adaptable to a minor change.
I await the post of.........................................................
I got fat because oat meal prices went up.
NO NO NO IT WASNT MY FAULT, IT WAS A CHANGE IN MY STAPLE DIET.
My body wasn't used to it. ha ha |
