Every time I mention this site to other teachers I get very negative comments about the community and atmosphere here.
What can posters here do to change this?
Do we want to?
Dave doesn't care, obviously as his site is still so slow after so long.
At the moment dave's esl is a big turn off for most professional global esl teachers. |

1. Nothing. If you do anything but kvetch and complain, you get called an apologist and told that this board's purpose is to serve as a forum for what many call "venting" - what I call very thinkly veiled racism.
2. It would be nice, but see #1.
Of course Dave doesn't care about the forums, they aren't a profit center. Global ESL teachers, especially Korean esl teachers, find other forums where the signal-to-noise ratio is better. |

I tend to try to stay mostly positive. Some days I fail. But I figure if I keep trying, maybe others will, too, and that perhaps the perception will change. If not, at least I don't feel so bad about how I mix with the group. To be honest, I'm not all that concerned about how others perceive the group where I post as long as I try to contribute in a positive manner. |

Well, I called a meeting of the internets, but Mr. Google and Mr. AskJeeves didnt show up so we didnt get much resolved.
Yeah, Dave's is pretty negative, but if someone asks a legitimate question they get legit responses. If someone is whining and moaning they get more of the same. I'm pretty sure the whole internet is like that.
The youtube comment section seems slightly negative, too. |

I asked another English Teacher if they used these forums. He responded, "Nah, it's full of haters." |

The first two responses were right on the money, stay positive. There is quite a bit of drama that goes on here. I've cut back the amout of time I spend posting on Dave's and tend to answer people's questions in PM's quite a bit more to people due to the nasty demenor. |

That should have said "thinly" and statistics don't explain the "Kimberly" bullshit or the constant talk about public urination. I post on a forum where an incident like the one in General about the little boy peeing would never be repeated because NOBODY CARES. |

Well, I'm not sure it is racist (besides.......you don't have to like everyone).
Many people call it as they see it, here.

Exactly. Sometimes you gotta call a spade a spade. Nothing racist about that, is there? |

YES IT IS! Spade is a racist term for a black person! Are you really that blinded by your hate for non-whites that you didn't see that one coming? |

I've been reading for quite a few months and I don't really find it too negative. Of course people are going to vent a bit but there's a good amount of decent talk on here. |

I've actually found the people who don't use Dave's are very negative minded folks - and the ones who do are usually pragmatists, realists, and doers.
also a lot of people who don't use Dave's also don't use computers much - some of us are just more cyber connected than others. nothing to do with racism, really, unless people on here go around saying it does and then people who disagree get tired of arguing about it and the thread devolves into petty crap and it only appears to be about racism when in fact those who are most positive just went to another thread. |

While I have certainly seen plenty of negativity here on Dave's, I have also received some excellent advice and information through this site, both in response to my own questions and just reading what goes on. As an additional plus some people are funny as hell. There is certainly some racism on this site, but I wouldn't say it's anywhere near the norm, and it seems to get more of a negative response than a positive one. At the very least it engages conversation on the topic, which in my experience is the first step not for continued racist beliefs, but for opening ones mind to the positive influences of our differences. At any rate, a spade is a negative term for black folks in the U.S., but the term "calling a spade a spade" has nothing to do with that slur. It's something of a mistranslation of I think latin, and refers to a "spade" as in a shovel. That being said, anybody know a good english website for the ferry system running to the islands off incheon???? Feel free to PM me so I don't hi-jack this thread. Bless up! |
