OK. I finally figured out that orange buses go longer distances than he other buses and therefore cost more money. I think it was like 2800 won or something. But what's the difeence between the green buses and the blue buses? I think they both cost 900 won. Can anyone clarify this?

Compliments of a blog I read occasionally:

Buses are color-coded by coverage area: Red buses are long distance, connecting Seoul and outlying suburbs. Blue buses criss-cross Seoul, think city bus. Green buses get you around the vicinity only (동), think local bus.

Blue buses also use the express bus lanes so are faster than the green buses which use regular traffic lanes.

The "maeul" buses, sure, but some green buses even go out of the city.

Interesting theories. I live in Hanam City, and the buses here go something like this:
112 is green. It goes to Techno Mart and back.
341 is blue. It goes past Jamsil and loops through Gangnam.
The 30-x buses are a variety of colors, but they all essentially go to Jamsil.
9301 is Red, and it goes through Dongdaemun to Jongno.
The local buses are all white classics, and I've never had to ride them.
The best bus is the airport limousine. Some days I see it and weep with affection. It's a maroon/magenta sort of color.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how my T-money card knows I'm transferring from the bus to the subway.

Maybe he moved to a new area recently and is more reliant on buses to get around.

I'm a little confused by the difference myself, as the bus I've always taken from Anyang to Yangjae recently changed from a green one into a blue one. Is it possible one is public and one is privately owned?

I'm pretty sure the T-Money cards use RFID chips (last I heard at least, lol)... So either the information is stored on the card, or in a central system computer somewhere...

Can someone confirm/deny my poorly supported theory? lol...

It's interesting because each bus number represents different areas. For example, the 420 goes to area 4, then 2, then 0. I know my area of Gangnam is 4, so if I see a bus with a 4, I can take it and get to some part of Gangnam, albeit it won't take me close to my home.

Here is a website that describes the bus number system wonderfully:

That's interesting to know, because the bus I take changed from 4424 (green) to 441 (blue).

Note: to anyone who wants to track me down and attack me, I'm moving in a couple days, so you don't have much time.

I take that bus too! Yeah, I don't know why they changed it but I guess it had to do with going cross-town now? I like it because it goes to Costco in Yangjae Smile
