|
|
At the end of May, when the school rep was asking if people wanted to extend, there was the (spoken) promise of a 'slight raise'. Now that end of contract time is two weeks away, this is the memo that came round...
***
Please understand our side- public education
If we raised some, even little, the private institute would be angry and get the higher payment than now-----and at the end, the payment for foreign teacher in Korea would be getted the inflation. Whole part of Korea, that's not good...
So give us a break.
You might think that's natural to get a raise for another next period.
But that simple thing make problems because we are very first special education district in Korea.
Many province/city/county now copycat of us.
So we feel that is very sensitive, so we need restraint to mention that matter now.
I feel sorry for you. But Please understand us...
Sorry for late answer..(withous any excuse)
***
If someone were to decide not to take it, they have until July 31 to find a new job. Not a lot of time, hunh? And the school learns a good lesson...lead 'em on with promises until too late for the teachers to make other plans. And if it works once, it will work again next year. |

That's stupid reasoning - That they can't give raises because hagwons will just increase the salaries of their teachers. The reason that raises are given is to encourage retention of teachers. They're only given to teachers that resign, right? And even if all salaries of teachers were raised, what's the big deal? I mean, if the market can handle it, then salaries should be raised. If demand is higher than supply, than salaries should be raised to increase supply. blah. |

But if your goal is to keep 'Korean money' in Korea, then bosses colluding to keep salaries at a fixed level year after year makes perfect sense. Waiting till the last possible moment to tell an employee that the promised raise is not going to be forthcoming is also a great tactic. Manipulative, but effective. And living in company housing adds a nice lever, too, don't you think?
An added benefit to this: Why move to a different school if you are offered the same deal? It helps to keep people employed at crappy salaries. |

And yet some people are still on my ass for dissing GEPIK for pulling this same s**t on me.
I'm afraid those are same people who will continue to renew their contracts under these unacceptable conditions, thus allowing employers to continue to deny us raises when raises are rightly due. |

I just got a full time last week. With the salaries that have been thrown around these days, there is no reason to stay anywhere that won't give you at least 100,000 a month raise.
100,000 a month might end up being 60 cents an hour more, depending on how much you work. It's not that significant. It just barely keeps up with cost of living increases.
If you accept the low balled no raise, you are volunteering to live at a lower standard of living than last year. |

What a crock of shyte!
You should send a memo to that dummy saying:
It is good that private institutes should have to raise their teachers salaries....often teachers work long hours and get little benefits.
If you expect teachers to stay at public schools you will HAVE to give raises otherwise you will be suffering a teacher shortage. Hiring a new teacher means another rectruiter fee, a gamble as to whether the new teacher will stay for an entire year and whether or not they will be as good as the one you lost.
Your inability to see these things is extremely short sighted! |

I showed this memo to my friends and those were his exact words, too. My response was 'is that really the best excuse that dumb broad can come up with?' In fairness, the 'English-speaking' school board rep who came up with this was probably doing someone else's bidding. |

Of course it is. But you are not taking into account everything.
You've been around long enough to have seen the fretting and fuming that goes on each time there is a report of Koreans spending more money abroad. This whole economy is premised on the idea of exporting as many goodies as possible so as to 'import' as much money as possible then keeping it here. Mercantilism.
Paying foreigners means money goes out.
Secondly, by everyone paying the same, there is little incentive for a teacher to move to a new school. Why should they go to the expense and trouble of moving for the same salary? Just to make a point? |

They are really pushing it. Lucily, I work outside any of these stupid systems. I get a 200000 raise next time along with 2 extra weeks vacation (tacked on to my 4 already). Plus other perks.
Seriously, it would have been better if they just said you are not getting a raise and left it at that. The reason is complete crap. |

My contract stipulates that I get a 100k raise if i resign plus a two bonus holiday and a free roundtrip tickect for it. I love public schools, at least when i sign a good contract. |

Only if they were to stay with the public school system, I think. There are now many nice hagwon jobs that pay more than your standard 2m a month for about the same amount, if not fewer, hours of teaching.
Of course, those are more difficult to come by ...
But if I were messed about like that, I *WOULD* change school just to spite them.
They may leave us in the lurch, but it's a bigger problem for us to leave them in the lurch. |

That reasoning is BS. There is no way in hell that anyone could consider that logical. It isn't natural to offer a raise to someone every year but it is very important for teacher retention. This isn't like a normal job, we are half way around the world where life is more difficult for us. I wouldn't accept that crap. They lied straight out. I would ditch them and go work elsewhere. You will be helping yourself and other teachers if you do.

No offense Mack, but I don't think people on this forum are dissing you for your Gepik comments. It's just that you come across as being very one sided and extreme in your opinions. Just b/c Gepik is screwing you doesn't mean it is screwing the rest of us. It sucks that you are being so mistreated but not ALL teachers are deserving of a raise every contract renewal.
