Is Korea a decent place to buy good quality filmmaking equipment (HD video vam, shotgun mic, tripod, etc.)? If so, would anyone know of approximate costs for equipment in the high-end prosumer or budget professional range?
Cheers

yongsan is probably your best bet, look at danawa.co.kr for prices to see how much you should be paying.

spose it all depends on your budget eh. but they tend to have pretty much everything

High end stuff. Don't waste your money. Koreans are not known to stock good high end stuff thats supposed to be MSRP. I wouldn't waste my cash here you will overpay. If you want high end for reasonable amount get it in America.

As already said, Korea is a terrible place to buy high-end electronics. For various reasons.

You might get lucky if you walk around Yongsan and make a good relationship with the very few vendors who even do that stuff.

But I don't think so. Anytime I've went to Yongsan to look for anything of a higher level than budget I've just got a lot of blank looks. Like, why would anyone pay more than budget price? Why not buy the same thing everyone else is buying?

they also tend to market only items that are NOT the latest - i.e., 1 year or older - maybe they buy them at a discount or something - but chances are you won't find the latest models here BUT you will be paying the highest prices for outdated items. Shocked

I've looked into purchasing HD cameras at the level which you are speaking of.

Avoid buying in Korea. Drastically overpriced.

Bummer.

Is there anywhere in Asia where I could get my hands on what I need for a reasonable price? I will be filming a documentary in Indonesia after working in Korea and was hoping to avoid coming home to Oz to buy the equipment.
