My laptop computer, which runs Windows XP, has WIFI capabilities. I used to have no problem going to a cafe and using the internet on it.
These days, even though I can connect to a wireless network, the internet and other programs that require that I be online (such as updating my anti-virus program) don't work. I think I may have clicked something or unchecked a box that I shouldn't have. Any suggestions? |

I take it this isn't your home connection?
A lot of wifi places you detect on Windows when you go to a cafe or in the street don't actually have internet connectivity or have it secured via a web login portal; a good example of this is the 'Nespot' hotspot run by KT. I think the answer may be to pay for internet.
Otherwise I will need some more details e.g. service provider, router make and model etc. |

Yes, I am not talking about my home connection. I am talking about cafes and other places that have WIFI service.
I used to be able to connect to the internet at these places, and suddenly I can't. The icon in the bottom right of the screen says I am connected, but the internet and other programs, like Skype, don't work.
I have no problems connecting with my other laptop at these cafes. So, I have a feeling that it's a simple problem with some setting that I need to change. |

may be the administrator in your network environment change the setting of your network configurations so now you don't have any privileged anymore to access internet through that's network. Or it also may be happened because there is some problem with your current network, but I'm not sure yet. If you know the administrator try to contact him/her first. |

Thanks, but I am talking about several places, including my apartment, a number of cafes, etc. Places where my laptop used to work. My new laptop works in these places, but the old one doesnt. |
